Droid is made by Motolora, Android is OS they use just to clear that up lol, there are alot of Android phones but only a few Droid phones.
As for the updates, different phones have different updates like 2.0, 2.1, 2.2. Most newer ones run on 2.2 which is the best of course.
If you like the BB handset, try the Droid Pro, it has the BB look and all that.

Samsung Fascinate is also good.

Also none of these are 4G if that matters to you.
My 2 cents if you have to buy now.
Droid X has a nice big screen, but it might be too big so pick it up and see if the size works with you.
Droid 2 Global has a slightly faster processor then the R2D2 or regular Droid 2. Has a physical keyboard if you have an aversion to software keyboards. (My opinion is that software keyboards are fine and unlike the iPhone, you can load other layouts if you don't like the one that comes with your phone. I use one called SwiftKey that has killer prediction based on what you type into it.) And there's voice dictation on Android phones that use 2.2 that just works magically.
Droid Incredible is the best of the three IMO... It's the one I ended up getting. Nice size, screen is the same size has Droid 2, fast, and it uses HTC Sense which has some little nice things that Motorola's Motoblur launcher can't do.
I would not go anywhere near the Samsung Fascinate. It's still on Android 2.1, 2.2 is coming, but Samsung is dragging their heels at getting it out. Rumor is because their launcher isn't that easy to update. More importantly, the phone has been Verizon'ed all to hell. It's pre-loaded with Bing, and you can't unload it and load in Google. There's even more crapware then any of the other phones mentioned. Verizon took what could have been an awesome phone and ruined it.
Now what
I would do - Don't buy anything right now. At CES, Verizon has a ton of great phones coming in the pipeline as soon as February. Processors will be faster. Battery life better. And I think Verizon is going to surprise people with how fast they are going to roll out LTE so getting a phone that supports it might not be such a bad idea.
