so i'm getting a droid today...
« on: January 20, 2011, 05:45:01 AM »
I went to the VZW store yesterday to see my options since my BB is... well... not good. And the guy told me I can get a droid phone with $100 rebate, hope on a sale going on now and some other stuff. So last night I went to see one of my best friends I haven't seen in a hot minute and he showed me his Droid X (he used to be a bigger BB fan than I was btw) and I was simply amazed. Yeah, long story short... I'm getting a droid today  :P

So the question is... which one?! It'd be under Verizon Wireless so I'm not sure of which phones are offered through them or which one is best. What you guys think? The guy was trying to sell me on a Droid R2D2, which I'm guessing is a Star Wars edition of some sorts (I don't mind) but I think it's one of their normal droids. I think they have the X, the 2, the incredible, and something that looks like the evo 4g.This is all new to me... usually I do tons of research before making the plunge but... I'm kinda needing a mobile since my work one sucks massive donkey balls and it's highlight (HTC windows 6.1) is it has a Solitaire game I have yet to finish once! lol

Is there a difference in the OS? I read something about Droids having different OS versions

i believe it's just what update you're on.      the latest i believe is android 2.2.1, and the droid x should be stocked up to date with the latest firmware.       you will be fine.

ok cool. Yeah I'll ask the guy.

funny thing... I popped the BB battery into the phone and it booted up like before. Miraculously it seemed to work flawlessly (well, not track ball and screen has water marks) until about 3 minutes of me sending messages of 'my bb is alive!'... it turned out to be mmmmmmmnnmmnmmmmmymmmnnmmbbnnmmmmnmismmmnmalive!mmmmmm' then it just shut down. screw this... droid it is today!

Droid is made by Motolora, Android is OS they use just to clear that up lol, there are alot of Android phones but only a few Droid phones.

As for the updates, different phones have different updates like 2.0, 2.1, 2.2.   Most newer ones run on 2.2 which is the best of course.

If you like the BB handset, try the Droid Pro, it has the BB look and all that.

Samsung Fascinate is also good.

Also none of these are 4G if that matters to you.

My 2 cents if you have to buy now.

Droid X has a nice big screen, but it might be too big so pick it up and see if the size works with you.
Droid 2 Global has a slightly faster processor then the R2D2 or regular Droid 2.  Has a physical keyboard if you have an aversion to software keyboards. (My opinion is that software keyboards are fine and unlike the iPhone, you can load other layouts if you don't like the one that comes with your phone. I use one called SwiftKey that has killer prediction based on what you type into it.)  And there's voice dictation on Android phones that use 2.2 that just works magically.
Droid Incredible is the best of the three IMO... It's the one I ended up getting.  Nice size, screen is the same size has Droid 2, fast, and it uses HTC Sense which has some little nice things that Motorola's Motoblur launcher can't do.

I would not go anywhere near the Samsung Fascinate.  It's still on Android 2.1, 2.2 is coming, but Samsung is dragging their heels at getting it out.  Rumor is because their launcher isn't that easy to update.  More importantly, the phone has been Verizon'ed all to hell.  It's pre-loaded with Bing, and you can't unload it and load in Google.  There's even more crapware then any of the other phones mentioned.  Verizon took what could have been an awesome phone and ruined it.

Now what I would do - Don't buy anything right now.  At CES, Verizon has a ton of great phones coming in the pipeline as soon as February. Processors will be faster. Battery life better. And I think Verizon is going to surprise people with how fast they are going to roll out LTE so getting a phone that supports it might not be such a bad idea.

I got a Droid X. Thought about the Pro and the 2 (even contemplated the R2D2 limited edition Droid 2 lol). I liked that one of those were world phones but I got my work mobile if I really need a world phone. Besides, the miss and I can use her BB Tour and just pop in a sim card, kinda like what we did when we went to Portugal on holiday

My droid x has os 2.2. Need to purge it from the preloaded apps it came with as well as the apps my girl was installing to it... like that tom cat app which she played for a good 10 minutes.

I passed on the Incredible (barely though) because both my friend who has one and the cool sales guy said it being more powerful kills batteries more than the x. I was really tempted but I opted for the X

The lady played with that talking cat all weekend long lol. She can be such a simpleton sometimes :P

So yeah... lovin the droid yo. I see what my boy said when he told me 'after a few days, you'll really see how limited you were with BB'

2 things stand out better with the BB
1. email, I got it instantly with BB but not so much with droid. sometimes i actually have to go into messaging to check email. not really a biggy since most times when i was notified with the bb i didn't check till later in the day.
2. BBM. other texting stuff is OK but damn was BBM the shit!

you should get a notification every time you receive an email i thought... unless that's only for gmail.   but you should be able to sync up different email accounts, and get those emails with a notification.

depends on the type of email account, i know netscape wont sync up which is kind of a good thing for me, waaaay too much spam, just check and see if  you can sync your email up if you can you should get your message notifications.

Well I have 2 email accounts set up with it. gmail and yahoo with yahoo being my primary one. I have the mail/messaging alert on the mobile and it works n all but it's not the same as BB. That's why BB was always so popular with businesses cuz you get notifications right away. Still, I'm not on top of my emails like that so I'm fine with 'refreshing' or dealing with a small delay. The sales guy said it's because of the way the servers and systems are setup that 1 is a push client server and the other is a pull client server (he briefly explained it to me).

I saw that in the app world. Looks like a cool lil game. Right now I'm hooked on GalaxIR, X Construct and Angry Birds (well... the lady is hooked on angry birds... I barely play it cuz she's always on it!)
