Google Activating 300,000 Android Phones Every Day
« on: December 14, 2010, 08:21:12 AM »

Tweet reveals more Androids being activated than iPhones; makes Android second-biggest smartphone OS.

Search giant Google claims that 300,000 mobile devices running its Android operating system are being activated every day.

The news was revealed by Google’s VP of engineering Andy Rubin, in a tweet last week.

The number is significant because for the first time Android activations outnumber those of Apple’s iPhone. Apple reported in October that it was activating 270,000 iPhones per day.

It marks a significant increase in Android’s reach. Google reported in the first quarter of the year that it was activating 65,000 devices a day and that number rose to 200,000 by the end of the second quarter.

Research firm Gartner noted last month that Android had overtaken the iPhone and Blackberry and became the second-biggest smartphone platform behind Nokia’s Symbian, reports AFP. Sales of Android-powered phones reached 20.5 million units in the third quarter of this year, giving Google a 25.5 per cent market share compared to just 3.5 per cent this time last year.

A new Android handset, the Nexus S, is to be released this week by Korean electronics firm Samsung. The successor to the Nexus One, released last year, it is the first smartphone to use the latest version of the Android OS, called Gingerbread.
