Microsoft has announced that sales of Minecraft have surpassed 100 million copies. That makes Minecraft the second best-selling game ever released, passing out Wii Sports at 82.78 million and the increasing popular Grand Theft Auto V – which currently sits at 65 million. Minecraft is behind Tetris, which has sold 495 million copies since launch. In addition, Microsoft also revealed that Minecraft sells around 53,000 copies per day.

It’s been almost two years since Microsoft acquired Minecraft developer Mojang, and lot has happened since then. The company created an infographic to showcase all the milestones that Minecraft has achieved, including the countries it sells best in, and also highlights whether fans are playing Minecraft on either PC, console, or mobile. The PC version of Minecraft alone has sold 22 million copies.

Microsoft even highlighted that four copies of Minecraft have been sold in Antarctica! The company teased that polar bears will be added to the next update for PC and Mac players. Over 40 million players every month spend time in adventuring, exploring, and crafting in Minecraft. One of the interesting statistics was if everyone who played Minecraft on an average month were to join hands, it could circle the entire Earth over one and a half times!

Below, you can find some additional statistics about the sales and momentum of Minecraft:

There have been over 100 million copies of Minecraft sold to-date – 106,859,714 to be exact! If each person that bought a copy formed a nation, it would be the 12th most populous in the world, behind Russia, Japan and Mexico.
More people are playing Minecraft now than ever before – every month there are an average of 40+ million unique Minecraft players across all platforms.
Since the beginning of 2016, Minecraft has averaged over 53,000 copies sold every day. That works out to around four copies sold in the time it took you to read that last sentence.
Players of Minecraft come from every country and territory on the planet. There have even been four copies sold to folks in Antarctica.
People of all ages and genders enjoy Minecraft across 14 different platforms. The average age is 29 years old and nearly 40% of our players are female.

In other news, Mojang and Telltale Games recently revealed that Episode 6 of Minecraft: Story Mode arrives next week with a cast of YouTubers. Microsoft also recently updated its advertising policy for Minecraft, preventing companies from paying users to create worlds and mods in Minecraft that promote a certain brand or product. Meanwhile, those playing Minecraft on consoles can look forward to the addition of the Battle mini game later this month.
