New TV for Caine!!!
« on: April 04, 2013, 12:45:42 PM »
So after looking through some stuff including Cuco's previous thread it has come to my attention that I want a Samsung. Just some questions though, from y'all whippersnappers and technophiles who know a lot more about this stuff than I do.

My lady has approved me for approximately $600 of play money. (We're actually trying to put money in our savings accounts and shit, like we're responsible adults or something crazy.) I'm sure this is plenty to get me what I want for the time being. I'm actually looking at the $300 range, so I got $300 left over for other toys!

As this will eventually be a bedroom TV I'm pretty sure I want to stick to the 30" range. That will be plenty decent for the living room for the time being. You know, until I can afford a ridiculously big one for the living room.

However do I wanna go with LED or Plasma. To my understanding I want to go with LED if for no other reason that Plasma's tend to be more of an energy hog. That and so help me if plasmas still in any way work as space heaters like they used to, I'll die in the summer.

Also how concerned should I be about Hz? I've read a lot of info that 60Hz is not only perfectly acceptable for gaming, but actually preferable?

Of course I'm also a big baseball/football fan and to my understanding a better refresh rate is better for that stuff? This is what I'm most unclear on.

Also I've been without long enough, I can be patient if need be. When besides the Super Bowl and Black Friday is a good time to buy TV's? When are the mega ridiculous sales typically?

Oh and is it advisable to buy a warranty??

Thanks in advance guys!

Pretty sure I want this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN32EH5300-32-Inch-1080p-Black/dp/B0074FGNJ6/ref=sr_1_1?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1365108612&sr=1-1&keywords=hdtv

Just do I want the 32" 60Hz, or the 40" 120Hz.

I know it sounds crazy but as far as size goes I'd prefer the 32"

The one you picked is nice, I almosted posted a link until I seen you already it but here are some others to thing about.
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_15832EX340/Sony-KDL-32EX340.html
http://www.abt.com/product/67626/Panasonic-TCL39B6.html

Best Buy has a 39'' for $299
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+39%26%2334%3B+Class+-+LED+-+1080p+-+60Hz+-+HDTV/6266483.p?id=1218725905648&skuId=6266483

Sony is a Sony, first hit against it, Sony is 720p, not gonna happen (thanks for the cheap-o looking option though)

Panasonic is also 720, no go

Not a fan of Best Buy and Toshiba's kinda scare me as far as build quality. I've had a lot of their products in the past, some which last forever, others that crap out quick as hell. I haven't heard a whole lot of great things about the build quality on their TV's either.

Looks like I'm going to try and find the 5300 in store and see if I can tell or give a crap about the 60/120hz. If I don't I'll likely be going with the 32". If I can tell some major difference then I'll go with the 40" gotta see Kershaw win the Cy Young again in full detail ;)

Don't fall for the it's not 1080 trap.
720 does not mean bad. I have a 42' Panasonic Plasma that's 720p. It's amazing.

A lot of the 720 vs 1080 depends on the contrast ratio, the size of a tv, how bright the room is, and how far you will be sitting from it.

I get that, one of the best tv's I've ever seen was my boys 720p plasma, got it.... shit the second year HD's were out?? I donno it was pretty early on. That thing looks amazing when it doesn't have shit burnt into it.

Just I may as well go 1080 and with a brand I like if all it means is another $50

LED is the way to go.  And make sure the dynamic contrast ratio is at least 4mil to 1

So ended up getting myself a 39" Samsung 5003, not quite as awesome as the 5300 I wanted but it was at a great price, without waiting, at a local non big box store, so I had to pull the trigger. Only 60 Hz, and only 2 HDMI and 1 USB, but oh well... This is gonna be the bedroom tv after black friday hopefully so..... Not bad for a starter.

Thanks for the help guys! Thread locked!  :ninja:
