Sony Details PSN Expansion To Other Products
Quote
At CES 2010, Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai described long-anticipated plans to unify its PlayStation Network content offerings across its product line - including network enabled Blu-ray players, Sony televisions and PCs.

Further, Hirai announced the creation of a new studio specifically to produce content for this type of distribution. The studio will be called Sony Network Entertainment, and Hirai is in charge of it.

The PSN expansion will deliver "a single user login and experience across all product lines," Hirai said, effectively extending PSN's reach beyond gaming platforms. The video service will come to networked Bravia televisions and Blu-Ray devices beginning next month. It will also be available to any Windows-based PC. Users may sign in and buy content with the same PlayStation Network account they have on their consoles.

The PSN expansion culminates a long period of anticipation that the service would be extended beyond gaming devices. Back in June, Hirai told Fortune magazine that an expanded PSN would likely debut in the spring of this year.

that's a lot of PS3's.

Sony's Kaz Hirai took to the stage at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier today, and while up there revealed some impressive sales numbers for the PlayStation 3 over the holiday season.

According to Sony's internal numbers, over the five week period running from the end of November to the new year, 3.8 million PlayStation 3 consoles were sold worldwide (1.7 million of them in the US), a number the company says is a 76% boost over the 2008 holiday period's figures.

Amazing what a more manageable price and great games can do for a console's fortunes.

Today's Microsoft CES keynote is likely to make mention of the arrival of the Xbox Game Room, a retro-themed game space, at least according to a video interview with Microsoft's Robbie Bach, president of the company's Entertainment and Devices Division.

More specifically, that's from the quickly pulled video, originally posted on Microsoft's On10.net and Channel 9 video blogs. In that video, Bach is said to have discussed a "one stop shop for retro games," according to a tipster who saw the video before it was pulled.

If true, that sure sounds a lot like the Atari and Intellivision game-filled arcade populated with Xbox Live Avatars that leaked in a survey late last year. At the time, the names RetroCade, RetroGame, Game Preserve, Game Gallery, Tower of ROM, Tower of Game(s), Classics and Classics LIVE were all competing against what sounds like the final winner, Game Room.

Microsoft's CES keynote is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 PM PST. We'll be liveblogging the event from the show, so check back to see just how much of a rumor this really is.

Thanks to Ian for the heads up!

Update: Looks like the video interview wasn't fully removed. Bach does confirm the Game Room addition to Xbox 360.

"It's sort of a retro approach. It's interesting, there's a generation... who grew up with a set of games like Centipede," Bach says of Xbox Game Room. "They look almost like casual, fun games today, at the time, they were high-end, edgy games. So Game Room is the idea of bringing that back to the market."

He also describes the Xbox Game Room as "like my daughter going to watch Journey." Hopefully that actually means Journey the video game will be playable.

Project Natal Launching This Holiday Season

It's always been strongly hinted at, but today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft's Robbie Bach has confirmed it: Project Natal will be out this "holiday season".

Nothing more specific than that was offered, but we take "holiday season" to be "November". Guess the motion-sensing peripheral's other important aspects - namely its price, included games and final name (remember, "Project Natal" is just a working title) - will have to wait for E3.

Although its cover was blown a little early, there's still new info coming out of the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas concerning Microsoft's Xbox Game Room.

Microsoft's press release concerning the new Xbox Live service says the Game Room will be a "place to relive the glory days of arcade games", and over the next three years will see the release of "over 1000" retro titles. It'll also serve as a kind of "mini Home" for your 360 avatars, as each user will get their own arcade area that can be customised and, no doubt, upgraded (for the right price).

Interestingly, the Game Room will carry a two-tiered price structure. You can buy a game for between 240-400 Microsoft Points, or if you really want that old arcade feeling, you can pay 40 Microsoft Points and play the game once, like it was 1985 and you'd just dropped a quarter. Only, now it's two quarters.

It'll be out in the "Spring", and from here on we'll stop calling it "Xbox Game Room", as it'll be available for the PC as well.

U.S. Xbox 360s Get IPTV Through AT&T Uverse This Year
« Reply #6 on: January 07, 2010, 11:19:48 AM »

Three years ago, Microsoft unveiled its IPTV plans for the Xbox 360, offering a working preview of the service at CES 2007. And, finally, IPTV is coming to the Xbox 360 in the United States by way of AT&T Uverse.

Microsoft's Steve Ballmer announced at the company's pre-CES keynote that, later this year, AT&T "will also enable subscribers to Uverse to enjoy that service on their Xbox 360 consoles." AT&T's Uverse cable/internet television service uses Microsoft's own Mediaroom software, meaning that Mediaroom is coming to the Xbox 360 in North America later this year.

Uverse was touted by Ballmer as "the best-rated, highest-rated residential TV satisfaction in the United States Southern and Western Regions for the second year in a row," according to J.D. Power and Associates.

What does that mean for Xbox 360 owners with Uverse subscriptions? Well, we're not 100% sure yet, as Microsoft hasn't revealed much about the partnership. Hopefully, it means more than just having on demand television programming, the Uverse multiview channel guide, and one less box hooked up to your television.

We'll be talking with Microsoft later today to learn more about the Uverse deal, so stay tuned. To the internet.

The First 30+ Games For Microsoft's New Game Room
Quote
Microsoft confirmed last night it was bringing the Game Room virtual hang out space to Xbox 360 and Games For Windows this year, an online arcade and—ahem—virtual console for your Xbox Avatar. What games will Xbox 360 owners get?

Initially, the service will launch this spring with 30 original arcade and old school console games, with Centipede and Asteroids Deluxe name-checked as leading the charge. The line up is comprised entirely of games for the Atari 2600, Intellivision and arcade offerings from the likes of Atari and Konami.

As the line-up is announced to reach 1000 games, it will at some point have to go beyond that small list of companies.

The following 30 games were showcased in the Game Room debut trailer, with a few more making cameos, but not yet officially announced.

1. Centipede (arcade)
2. Asteroids Deluxe (arcade)
3. Tempest (arcade)
4. Crystal Castles (arcade)
5. Lunar Lander (arcade)
6. Jungler (arcade)
7. Road Fighter (arcade)
8. Scramble (arcade)
9. Finalizer (arcade)
10. Tutankham (arcade)
11. Shao-Lin's Road (arcade)
12. Super Cobra (arcade)
13. Red Baron (arcade)
14. Gravitar (arcade)
15. Battlantlis
16. Astrosmash (Intellivision)
17. Mountain Madness Super Pro Skiing (Intellivision)
18. Armor Battle (Intellivision)
19. Space Hawk (Intellivision)
20. Sub Hunt (Intellivision)
21. Sea Battle (Intellivision)
22. Space Armada (Intellivision)
23. Astrosmash (Intellivision)
24. Star Raiders (Atari 2600)
25. Outlaw (Atari 2600)
26. Yar's Revenge (Atari 2600)
27. Millipede (Atari 2600)
28. Football (Atari 2600)
29. RealSports Tennis (Atari 2600)
30. Combat (Atari 2600)

Sky Diver for the Atari 2600 makes a brief appearance in the first Game Room trailer, so expect it—and many other 2600 titles—eventually. The initial Game Room leak showed off games like Shark! Shark! and Star Strike for the Intellvision and Atari's RealSports Baseball and Realsports Basketball, so expect those too.

Our men at CES have just tried out the Xbox 360's virtual arcade, the Xbox Game Room, at CES. Watch and decide if the Game Room is for you. Some very cool stuff here, about, of all things, the audio.

Have 2 friends out at CES, 1 (enfig) does mostly car related electronics but the other is the owner of MAINGEAR PCs. You probably saw his Vista based (preWindows 7 launch) gaming rig on G4's AOTS and was rated as the fasted most powerful computer they ever tested and the mind boggling part was that it was Vista based. He had a store close by 1 town over but moved to a few more towns over to a bigger place. Have yet to walk into his new shop but soon as he gets back I'm going over there. Sadly I wanted to build my own rig but I might downgrade my original specs and have him and his crew build me a badass one. Does awesome work and they both are lucky to be out there partying it up

So tomorrow I'm hitting up MAINGEAR's new location. Spoke to the owner I would be on my way to check out a new desktop. Been e-window shopping for either a laptop or a desktop so I'll make my decision tomorrow, but right now a bangin desktop from them.

My buddy told me they had a full blown racing sim rig with 3 screens and all. Apparently at one point they even had it on one of those moving frames but not sure if that's still true. I'll be taking some pics of what they got and will be checking it out. 3 screens = awesome, pricey but awesome, and their PCs are no joke. Might make me repurchase BC2 or COD  :P
