All SEVEN modes of A minor diatonic laid out in three note per string patterns. You can practice these with alternate picking to really give your picking technique a workout. Experiment playing these over an A minor chord to hear the different "feel" you get from each one. This is the A minor diatonic scale laid out over the ENTIRE guitar neck!

Position #1 (Ionian Mode):

 -----------------------------------7-8-10------------------------
 ---------------------------6-8-10--------------------------------
 --------------------5-7-9----------------------------------------
 --------------5-7-9----------------------------------------------
 --------5-7-8----------------------------------------------------
 --5-7-8----------------------------------------------------------

Position #2 (Dorian Mode):

 -------------------------------------------9-10-12----------------
 ----------------------------------8-10-12-------------------------
 --------------------------7-9-10----------------------------------
 ------------------7-9-10------------------------------------------
 ----------7-8-10--------------------------------------------------
 --7-8-10----------------------------------------------------------

Position #3 (Phrygian Mode):

 ------------------------------------------------10-12-13----------
 --------------------------------------10-12-13--------------------
 -----------------------------9-10-12------------------------------
 --------------------9-10-12---------------------------------------
 -----------8-10-12------------------------------------------------
 --8-10-12---------------------------------------------------------

Position #4 (Lydian Mode):

 ----------------------------------------------------12-13-15-----
 ------------------------------------------12-13-15---------------
 --------------------------------10-12-14-------------------------
 ----------------------10-12-14-----------------------------------
 ------------10-12-14---------------------------------------------
 --10-12-13-------------------------------------------------------

Position #5 (Mixolydian Mode):

 ----------------------------------------------------13-15-17-----
 ------------------------------------------13-15-17---------------
 --------------------------------12-14-16-------------------------
 ----------------------12-14-15-----------------------------------
 ------------12-14-15---------------------------------------------
 --12-13-15-------------------------------------------------------

Position #6 (Aeolian Mode):

 ----------------------------------------------------15-17-19-----
 ------------------------------------------15-17-18---------------
 --------------------------------14-15-17-------------------------
 ----------------------14-15-17-----------------------------------
 ------------14-15-17---------------------------------------------
 --13-15-17-------------------------------------------------------

Position #7 (Locrian Mode):

 ----------------------------------------------------17-19-20-----
 ------------------------------------------17-18-20---------------
 --------------------------------16-17-19-------------------------
 ----------------------15-17-19-----------------------------------
 ------------15-17-19---------------------------------------------
 --15-17-19-------------------------------------------------------

Another great way to build up speed is to use what is called "economy picking." Economy picking is extremely similar to alternate picking so unless you have alternate picking down don't try this just yet. The main difference between alternate picking and economy picking is that with alternate picking you use a strictly consistent down, up, down, up, ect., ect. picking motion. But with economy picking you would start your picking motion with a down, up, down motion but when changing strings instead of using the up motion that would be used with strict alternate picking you would hit the note on the next string with the same downstroke you used on the last note of the string before it. This saves time by eliminating "recoil" and thus making your picking motion more economic with less time and motion in between notes. So your picking motion would look like this: down, up, down, down. You always pick through the last note and use the same motion to start the next set of notes on the next string. We'll use an example from above to demonstrate the correct picking motion you would use. Your picking motion should look like this:

                ^           ^            ^            ^           ^
     D  U   D   D  U   D   D   U   D   D   U   D  D   U   D   D   U   D
 ----------------------------------------------------17-19-20-----
 ------------------------------------------17-18-20---------------
 --------------------------------16-17-19-------------------------
 ----------------------15-17-19-----------------------------------
 ------------15-17-19---------------------------------------------
 --15-17-19-------------------------------------------------------

This technique is fairly easy if you have a good alternate picking technique the only difficulty being breaking the habit of strict alternate picking. This can be EXTREMELY difficult to get the hang of if your alternate picking technique is not up to par so work on that first until you can do it in your sleep. This concept increases speed exponentially by using the scientific principle "less motion equals less time elapsed." By breaking your picking motion down to the most "economic" motion with no wasted movement (hence the name "economy picking") with a little practice you can really fly. Take your time with this as it is A LOT of information to absorb. But if you master economy picking you will be able to soar all over the neck using three note per string patterns exponentially faster than you were able to before. Any questions? Now get to work!
