Tom Petty - Learning To Fly
« on: June 21, 2011, 01:25:16 PM »
Listen to the song for the strum pattern. It is a fairly simple song and other than the fact that it has only four chords I chose it because even during the chorus the chord progression remains the same. This is a great campfire song. I hope you enjoy.

Learning To Fly Ė Tom Petty

F -  133211
C/G -  332010 (whenever you see a chord like this the name of the chord is on the left and the bass or lowest voicing played is on the right)
Am - x02210
G -  320003
______________________________

Intro: [F  C/G  Am   G] X 4

F              C/G   Am  G  F             C/G   Am   G
Well I started out,       down a dirty road
F       C/G  Am   G     F     C/G  Am   G
Started out           all alone
F                C/G   Am   G  F                C/G    Am  G
And the sun went down,       as I crossed the hill
F               C/G   Am  G    F              C/G   Am  G
As the town lit up,          the world got still

Chorus:
F               C/G   Am  G   F               C/G    Am  G
Iím learning to fly,        but I ainít got wings
F      C/G   Am  G   F              C/G    Am  G
Coming down        is the hardest thing

F                 C/G   Am  G   F        C/G   Am   G
Well the good olí days,       may not return
F                 C/G   Am  G  F               C/G   Am   G
And the rocks may melt       and the sea may burn

(Chorus)
(solo)

F             C/G   Am  G   F             C/G   Am   G
Well some say life        will beat you down,
F          C/G    Am  G   F          C/G    Am   G
Break your heart,       steal your crown
F            C/G   Am  G   F             C/G   Am   G
So I started out,        for god knows where
F            C/G   Am  G   F          C/G   Am   G
I guess Iíll know        when I get there

F               C/G   Am  G   F          C/G      Am  G
Iím learning to fly,        around the clouds,
F             C/G   Am  G   F         C/G    Am  G
But what goes up          must come down

Awesome idea. The chords fingering are a little crude. The C/G chords can also be played as a regular C Major I just think the C/G voicing sounds closer to the album.
