HTC Evo 4G vs Samsung Epic 4G
« on: September 28, 2010, 07:43:32 AM »
I've had an Iphone 3G for the past two years and my AT&T contract expired today. I want to switch to the Android Operating system and i feel like Sprint has the best plan pricing or what I use right now.

That being said I am having a hard time deciding between the HTC Evo 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G.

Does anyone have any experience/insight on these two devices that could help me narrow down my decision?

Thanks :)

nice thread.    i'm sure you can't go wrong with either one of those.      i'll try to get a hold of our phone moderator, who knows what's up with these two phones.

i've heard that the evo is awesome.

well do you text ALOT, or do you like touch screens? i got the one i got because it had the slide querty pad, god knows i hate touch phones, so i can manuver pretty much anything with my arrow keys, i know smasung is durable as hell, last phone was one and put up with abuse no problem, and so far my new one is going GREAT, even with the kids throwing it, which im amazed at, but all depends on your specific needs/wants.

I've had an iphone for 2 years and while i definitely miss having a textile keyboard, i had the chance to play with an Evo and didnt seem to have much of a problem typing on it. it was much more responsive than my iphone on screen keyboard.

right now the Evo is better in my book due to the price, screen size, reviews, and the Sense interface. But i like the Epic for the keyboard and AMOLED screen.

i am amazed my iphone lasted 2 years, i've never had a cell phone last that long and preferably i'd like to get another 2 out of this one. The slide out keyboard seems like something i would break within 6 months (much like the old flip phones i used to get)

thanks for the responses everyone! :)

yes mid this i know, unfortunetly, but with the slide qwerty board you dont need the touch screen nearly as much, only time i use it is when i selct the icon on the phone, then poof keyboard comes out and i use the keyboard,

i didn't know you were talking about typing with a keyboard... ya, i like keyboard because my fingers are big, but the evo is a big screen, and you'll easily be able to handle on screen typing.   imo.

Personally I'd love both handsets but they aren't available over here. :(

Hardware wise, the epic is far faster than the Evo. It has a better CPU and a far more powerful GPU and a better camera from what I know.

My wife has the Galaxy-S that has the same internals as the Epic and hers pisses all over my Nexus when it comes to comes to games and things.

The evo is no poor handset despite this.

Its a tough choice!

Yeah, the Galaxy-S is the most powerful of Android hardware around at the moment and the Epic is essentially a Galaxy-S with a keyboard and 4G.

The Evo has the same CPU/GPU as the Nexus One and HTC Desire and neither can keep up with the Galaxy.

Galaxy-S Polygon count = 90 million per second Source
Sega Dreamcast = 7 million polygons per second. Source
It simply kicks arse!  ;D

i still think i'm going to go with the evo. my friend sent me an interesting stat that wifi tethering only works over 4G with the epic.. and since there is very little 4g coverage in my city.. i think i'm going to go evo.

the epic basically has a GPU intergated so it is better for gaming but i dont game on my phone.. i work on my phone so i think the evo is good enough for me.

thanks for the input everyone.

No problems iamb0b0!

I'm considering upgrading my Nexus One to the Desire HD, which is a GSM version of the Evo.

I'd love a handset that is at a manageable size with such a large screen. You can't really go wrong with either of them!

Shit, is it still not here? :(

That is one issue with the customised Android builds, updates. The T-Mobile G2 looks like it is running stock Android so it should be a little quicker with Android updates.

My Streak only has Android 2.1 tho and there isn't much different to 2.1 and 2.2. Lets hope they hurry up!

i guess the Evo has 2.2 already. epic should get it soon.

I also read an article the other day that say that the upload limit for the Epic on sprint caps at like 125kbit/s.. eff that noise..

yeah the epic is better for movies/gaming but i dont really do either of those on my phone.. also hear mixed reviews about the cameras.. the EVo has a better fornt facing camera and although it is 8MP vs the epic's 5MP.. i hear the Epic has a better sensor and takes slightly better pictures.

but again.. i wont use these features as much on my phone
