Apple Announces iPhone 4
« on: June 07, 2010, 06:06:27 PM »

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has announced that the company's next generation smartphone, iPhone 4, will launch later this month.

“In 2007 iPhone reinvented what we thought of as a smartphone. It's hard to remember what it was like. It was really different before the iPhone," he said at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, as reported by Engadget.

"It started to change things. In 2008 we added 3G and the App Store, in 2009 the 3GS was twice as fast, and we added some other cool features like video... in 2010 we're going to take the biggest leap since the original iPhone."

Jobs said that the device introduces 100 new features and is the thinnest smartphone on the planet at 9.3 millimeters - 24 per cent slimmer than the iPhone 3GS. Like previous models it boasts a 3.5 inch display, but it offers 960 x 640 pixels - four times as many pixels as the iPhone 3GS and 78 per cent of the pixels on an iPad.

It sports improved battery life, HD video recording at 720p and 30fps, a new five megapixel autofocus camera with a 5x digital zoom and built-in LED flash, and wi-fi “FaceTime” video calling, which the company says “is as easy as making a regular voice call, with no set-up required”.

iPhone 4 adds a gyroscope too, making it "perfect for gaming", according to Jobs. "iPhone 4 has a built-in 3-axis gyro that when combined with the accelerometer provides 6-axis motion sensing such as up and down, side to side, forward and backward and pitch and roll... Developers can access the gyro using the new CoreMotion API to make games and other apps that go well beyond what other mobile devices offer."

iPhone 4 comes in either black or white and will be available in the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan on June 24 for a suggested retail price of $199 for a 16GB model and $299 for a 32GB model. Also on June 24, a new iPhone 3GS 8GB model will be available for $99 in the US. iPhone 4 will roll out worldwide to 88 countries by the end of September.

iPhone 4 comes with new operating system iOS 4 - also available on June 21 as a free software update - which includes over 100 new features and 1500 new APIs for developers.
