StarCraft 2 Beta Phase 1 Extended Until June 7
by Brian Leahy May 31, 2010 3:00pm CST

The first phase of the StarCraft II multiplayer beta was scheduled to end today. It isn't.

Blizzard has extended the beta through June 7 at which point it will go offline as the company preps for the retail launch on July 27.
It is suspected that the second phase will be an "open" stress test of the new Battle.net 2.0, similar to pre-release beta tests for Blizzard games like WarCraft III and Diablo 2.

StarCraft 2 Adding Chat Rooms, Beta Phase 2 in Early July
by Brian Leahy Jun 28, 2010 2:00pm CST

In the madness of E3 2010, I failed in keeping you up to date with StarCraft II. I apologize. There are a few interesting pieces of news surrounding Blizzard's RTS sequel, which will be released on July 27 for the PC and Mac.

First, Blizzard will be adding private chat channel functionality in some form in a patch shortly after the retail release of the game. A long-requested feature, chat channels were not in the beta test and will not be finished in time for the shipping product, but will be added soon thereafter. This should help players organize with friends, clans, and communities prior to the planned group functionality, which was originally going to introduce chat.

Additionally, the second phase of the StarCraft II beta is set to kick-off in early July. Rumors had placed the second phase on July 1st, but Blizzard has not yet committed to a date. This upcoming phase should last a few weeks before eventually coming down prior to the game's retail release.

As for tournaments, Blizzard will be issuing a patch after release (via BigDownload.com) with "features to address the needs of location-based pro tournaments," though no specifics are given as to what these features will be. As StarCraft II requires a persistent connection to Battle.net and includes no LAN play, smart money is on this patch adding something functionally similar to LAN play for Blizzard-licensed tournament partners. Still, I would not expect LAN play to be added in for the general population.

Finally, Blizzard has announced that players in South Korea that already have active World of WarCraft subscriptions will be able to play StarCraft II using the same game time. The game will also be sold exclusively in a digital format in Korea for the time being.

If it took them this long and cost this much. it better not be a flop. I'll laugh if it gets bad reviews.

That's staggering!  As DeathWish001 said, WOW probably funded this.  Tho, those Korean Starcraft hardcores probably didn't hurt the cause much.

I don't know how this surprises anyone... I also refuse to believe that Blizzard is capable of anything less then amazing at this point. They take there time for a reason folks, and it's great for everyone that they have the funds to do it.

My guess is, you just need a computer that is better then your Xbox. Blizzard is not known for making a resource demanding game.

And look what I found :P

I know its says for Beta. but you cant be too far off from the beta specs.

StarCraft II.....cool write up, local business
« Reply #11 on: July 22, 2010, 09:59:47 AM »
Not sure if there are any fans of the first but I found a nice write up on Orange County Register about the sequel:
http://www.ocregister.com/news/game-258845-blizzard-starcraft.html

Our company build Blizzard Entertainments headquarters and a smaller company under Blizzard works upstairs from me. They had all of these cardboard cutouts of the game in their lobby. Just cool to see a local company doing their thing, with much fanfare & success.
I feel so insider!

As with all games, there will be bugs at release. Blizzard has detailed the known issues in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty on its forums as well as some workarounds for some of the issues.

Most notably, the game will crash if run in a Windows compatibility mode and there is a potential overheating issue if the player spends too much time looking at game "screens that are light on detail" as the "game has nothing to do so it is primarily just working on drawing the screen very quickly." This can include the game's main menu or other interface screens. A simple framerate cap is suggested as a workaround.

There are a few more issues, most revolving around specific software or behaviors. Are you having any issues with your shiny new copy of StarCraft II? What about on the Mac? Performance on a Mac during the beta was lagging behind the PC version, but I'm curious to find out if it evened out for launch.
