What we learned at the PlayStation 4 event
by Jessica Conditt   on Feb 20th 2013 9:00PM

Sony didn't disappoint with its super-secret conference today, unveiling the PlayStation 4 and a heap of games to go with it. While some of our predictions went unfulfilled – we didn't really expect to hear anything about The Last Guardian anyway – Sony made up for it with a few surprises, such as Diablo 3 coming to PS4 and PS3.

Here's a quick roundup of the major announcements from Sony's two-hour-long conference:

The PlayStation 4 is a thing, and it's coming holiday 2013. The PS4 has 8GB of memory, a local hard drive and x86 CPU, alongside a secondary custom chip that allows users to play games while they download (and will eventually read our minds).

The DualShock 4 controller features a touch pad front-and-center, alongside a headphone jack and share button that broadcasts games to other players in real-time. An additional "light bar" helps identify individual players and turns the gamepad into a Move controller, though the Move still works with PS4. The share button uses tech from Gaikai.

The PlayStation Cloud streams PS1, PS2 and PS3 games, since it appears the PS4 won't be able to play legacy discs. The Vita will be able to play PS4 games remotely.

And then there are the PS4 games: Knack from Mark Cerny, Killzone: Shadow Fall from Guerilla Games, Driveclub from Evolution Studios, Infamous: Second Son from Sucker Punch, The Witness from Jonathan Blow, Watch Dogs from Ubisoft, Diablo 3 from Blizzard, and Destiny gets Sony-exclusive content from Bungie. Quantic Dream and Capcom showed off some pretty tech demos, including one for Capcom's new original IP, codenamed Deep Down.

Why Didn’t We See The Actual PlayStation 4 Tonight? Sony’s Boss Explains.

Quote
Well, that was weird. We got a console reveal without Sony actually revealing the console. It's left a lot of people confused, maybe even concerned, so given the chance we had to ask: where was the PS4?

"Why do you care?", laughs Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony's Worldwide Studios.

Pressed as to what we should be reading into when we get a console reveal without the reveal of the console, Yoshida tells Kotaku "It was almost the other way around. When we planned for this event, obviously we discussed what we should show and talk about."

"As far as the DualShock 4 is concerned we wanted to do the live demo. And we were like, yeah, we have to show the controller, because it's awkward not to show the controller when someone is doing a demo. And also the feature that the DualShock 4 has, the share button, is a very key idea behind the design of the PS4... We really wanted to explain what we've done with the DualShock 4, but as far as the system itself we have to keep something new for later. Otherwise you'd get bored."

So I haven't looked too deeply into this yet, but these are my feelings in regards to Sony's shindig yesterday. I haven't watched it yet, I'm waiting for them to post it to YouTube in HD but this is from the things I've noticed from reading the reports from Polygon, Anandtech, Kotaku, Joystiq, etc.

360 Fanboy Rant:
PS4 at least from a hardware standpoint is a validation of some of the things that the Xbox pioneered. PC-like architecture, unified memory, headphone jack on the controller, stereo cameras for motion control, concave stick design, even the handles on the controller are things that are "borrowed" from the Xbox or 360.  I like how Dave Perry got up there and said this new version of PSN was going to be faster, because it's been really go aweful slow lately.

PC Hardware Geek:
I don't have a lot of faith in AMD making a processor and GPU that will last as long as what the PS3 is based on. That said, I'm really surprised that they are basing this on and x86 architecture when the trend in tech is to go with something ARM-based because of how fast and cheap it is. And if they stuck with ARM, it would make porting to the Vita even easier.  At least the Blu ray drive will be faster, but I'm probably going to be downloading all my games from now on so it's really not going to make my Blu ray movies faster.

Regular Video Game Player:
Meh. I don't see anything that really excites me and makes me want to spend money on this. Show me some more games!

Immediate Gameplay
PS4 radically reduces the lag time between players and their content. PS4 features “suspend mode” which keeps the system in a low power state while preserving the game session. The time it takes today to boot a console and load a saved game will be a thing of the past. With PS4, gamers just hit the power button again and are promptly back playing the game at the exact point where they left off. Additionally, users can boot a variety of applications including a web browser when playing a game on PS4.
PS4 also enables games to be downloaded or updated in the background, or even in stand-by mode. The system takes it one step further by making digital titles playable as they are being downloaded. When a player purchases a game, PS4 downloads just a fraction of the data so gamers can start playing immediately, and the rest is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay.
Quote:
DUALSHOCK®4 features a light bar on the top with three color LEDs that illuminate in various colors. The light bar illuminates to match the color of characters in a game to offer a simpler, more friendly way to identify players, even when playing side by side. The light bar also changes patterns during gameplay to provide useful information to gamers, such as when a character is critically low on health or has taken major damage.
Quote:
Combined with the Mono Headset that will be bundled with PS4, gamers will also be able to chat with friends playing online, while hearing sound effects from the controller in hand.

8 cores and 8 gigs of memory looks nice.  Pardon my ignorance on hardware, but how much better is this?  I expected a completely high tech super gaming computer style console...is it?  Seems like a 360 on steroids.  Is the 720 going to be about the same as ps4?

As a guy who has a lot of studying up to do before I buy a PC and has been out of the loop forever, why is everyone bashing AMD? Are the just cheaply made and prone to failure? Also doesn't rumor have it that the nextbox is using AMD as well? If that is the case shouldn't we be concerned for both upcoming consoles?

Current-gen PSN games won't transfer to PS4
Better keep those PS3s around then.

By Jeffrey Matulef Published Thursday, 21 February 2013

Current-gen PSN titles and save data won't transfer to PlayStation 4, Sony has revealed.

Sun setting on the PS3.
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed this earlier today when speaking to Endgadget. While the PS4 will have limited backwards compatibility via the console's cloud-streaming services, it won't transfer your game data and thus you won't be able to transfer your library of PSN games.

This realises a fear many consumers have had over the past several years as the digital marketplace has become an increasingly accepted means of purchasing goods - many of which are only available as downloadable content. This raises concerns regarding how long PS3 - and Vita - titles will be available on the PlayStation Store once the current-gen consoles are phased out.

So say your PS3 dies in seven years and you buy a new one to play all your older games on. Would you still be able to reclaim all your lost content tied to your PSN account for a console that's no longer being manufactured? Or would you have to buy, oh let's say Journey, again on PS4, despite having already purchased it before?

This could be a major issue as over the last half decade we've seen a lot of classic games get the HD treatment and collectors have taken to bulking up their libraries with these upgraded definitive versions of their favourite games. If all these titles are tethered to a console that may or may not still be supported in a few years it could really put a damper on the whole prosperity thing.

We've posed these questions to Sony and are awaiting reply. We'll update as we learn more.

ZERO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY!? NO PS1, PS2, PS3, OR PSN GAMES AVAILABLE ON PS4

Yeah got a strange feeling there isn't a chance in hell Sony will ever get my money, EVER again.

PAY ATTENTION MS! Don't you dare try and pull this shit, you best be backwards compatible and I best be able to play all of my XBLA and XBLIndie games on the nextbox!

AMD used to have issues with reliably, but these days they are just a more budget option.  I would never build or buy a PC/Laptop with AMD unless I couldn't afford a decent Intel/NVidia system. In the PC space, AMD has a tenancy have more driver issues that Nvidia.

These are custom built chips though, so we shouldn't have to worry to much about reliability especially since the whole red ring Microsoft fiasco. Engineers should have learned their lesson.

So I watched the whole presentation last night. The first half was so much of an apology to developers it was almost embarrassing.  The PS3 may have been the stronger system, but if your developers have to spend all their time learning the how to program for the system best instead of just making something great it's not good. There's a reason why they were saying there was going to be 8GB of unified memory and a x86 based CPU. Because the Cell and it's SPEs were a real bear to wrangle.  And the small about of system RAM kept features like cross game chat from being implemented. It's not because they didn't want that feature, it was because there wasn't enough system resources available to do it. Another example is when they said that there was going to be a dedicated "processor" for downloads too.

And then Sony brought out Jonathon Blow... holy crap... the indie game poster child.  And then Blizzard after that.  It reminded me of when they brought out Gabe Newell at E3 to say Valve was bringing Steam to the PS3. (For one game... does Counterstrike:GO have it too?)

I'm really interested to see what from the presentation will actually come to fruition during the life of the next console. Everything is said in such a non-committal way. Will remote play be as robust as they hope? Will it be on as many phones or tablets? Cause so far the Playstation Mobile support has been pretty pathetic. I do think the share features will be implemented at least the live streaming and video uploading.  Remote control would be a little tougher.  We'll see. I'm for sure still interested in the system. I want to see more though.

Right on Dusto I appreciate the explanation for us non PC guys! Karma for you!

Yeah I kinda knew that AMD was the... cheap/cheaper option out there, which obviously comes with it's own source of problems. I didn't know to what extent however. Also, yeah if I was going to drop big money into a PC I'd do my research and get the best stuff I could at my price point at the time. I might go cheap on HDD or something of the like if I could, but as far as GPU's go, no freaking way.

Of course it makes sense that both Sony and MS would want the most power they could get for as cheap as possible so AMD makes a lot of sense. As you said, due to the fact that they are custom, hopefully that wont spell big problems for either system. I mean rumor has it MS is going AMD right?

Finally, yeah, a lot of the "big" features Sony was touting were seemingly very "prototype" ideas. We'll see how any and all of this sharing, play as you download, etc. stuff actually plays out. Especially since last I checked Sony had a bigger share of the market in areas that don't necessarily have the best broadband connections to be able to pull this sort of stuff off.

Some of us don't enjoy clutter in our entertainment systems as others first of all. On top of that, not all of us have HDTV's still and many of us don't have HDTV's that have more than a few HDMI slots as well. What if I have three and each of them are taken up by a ps3, 360, and a blu player? Wouldn't it be really nice to be able to just put in my PS4 and not worry about it? As far as not having physical backwards compatibility, that's not really a deal breaker, and I get it but PSN games? That just seems ridiculous. I don't know about you but one would assume that something called a Playstation Network might actually be... gee... I donno.... A NETWORK!? On top of that they specified that all this content would be available on the cloud network for purchase. So yeah, you can go ahead and play things like Journey on PS4 probably, you can play all your PS1/2/3 games on it, you just have to buy them again.

And yes Mid, I do know about our nearly a year old information. A lot can happen in that amount of time. Also we weren't necessarily confirmed that all XBLA/Indie content would be available. The way our info was worded it seemed far more directed towards disc content.

I'd be peeved if MS did something like this, however since they haven't announced anything as of yet, saying backwards compatible everything would definitely put some smack down on Sony.

P.S. - Pretty sure Infamous Deep Down will only be available on PS4, maybe on ps3? Not sure how likely that is though. Watch Dogs has been confirmed for everything current and next gen.

Sony Won't Answer These Questions About PS4 DRM and Used Games... Yet

Used games. Love'em or hate'em, you've probably got some opinion on the furor surrounding how we'll buy, sell, and borrow video games in the future.

Microsoft has already revealed plans to restrict used games in some way for Xbox One, and Sony has been murky about how the PS4 will handle them. Tons and tons of gamers are still campaigning for pro-consumer policies on the PS4, and at least a few Sony execs are paying attention. But the company has yet to say anything official.

So being the relentlessly-pestering reporters we are, we've reached out to Sony several times over the past few days with questions about their policies. Here's what we asked:

    1) Sony has previously said that the PS4 does not require an online connection. To be clear, is this true perpetually, or will the console need to occasionally connect online? If so, how often?

    2) Will games need to be registered online in order to use them the first time out?

    3) Will the PS4 games be able to be bought and sold used? Or will there be an online activation fee that essentially causes a used game to cost as much as a new game, thereby eliminating the relevance of used games?

Last night, a Sony representative finally got back to us. His response:

I looked into this, and at this point we’re not providing any additional clarification beyond what we stated around the PS4 announcement. If anything changes, I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

We're expecting to hear more at E3 in a week and a half—and of course we'll be pressing both Microsoft and Sony for more details at every opportunity. Hopefully they've got straight answers by then.

The camera is also a $60 add-on. Another reason why their price is $399.

At least it's optional, instead of required.

It's been two weeks since we published our Top 5 Xbox One Announcements for Europe's answer to E3, and there are only two weeks left to go until Gamescom itself, so now seems like a good time to unveil the top 5 announcements we want from Sony and the PlayStation brand. Gamescom runs every year in Germany and Sony has confirmed that they'll have a press conference all Europe's own for consumers eager for more news about PlayStation 4.

Further, Sony has said that its lagging handheld Vita will get a share of the spotlight, unlike its less-than-stellar showing at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, CA. We want software for the handheld and a hard release date for the PlayStation 4, but we also know to dream big. Hey, we said we wanted an Xbox One solution for indies and we were rewarded. Let's see if we can't twist Sony's arm on a few must-have PlayStation announcements at Gamescom.

Uncharted 4 Teased At Press Conference, Coming 2014

Start off with a major next-gen software announcement that no one is expecting…. Baaahahaha. Just kidding. Everyone's expecting Uncharted 4, despite the fact that Naughty Dog likes to finish franchises and move on. Nathan Drake is as close as PlayStation has come at establishing a singular mascot with widespread appeal. Who doesn't like swinging around jungles, leaping across death-defying gaps, and generally looking handsome in a half-tuck?

We can't assume Sony will have much Uncharted 4 to show, but even a tease would be welcome. A 2014 (planned) release date would be even better! With Microsoft jumping at the bit to let gamers know that Halo will show up on Xbox One at some point, it wouldn't hurt Sony to do the same with their dashing (and stinky, seriously, have you seen the pit stains?) adventurer.

Complete PS4 UI and Dashboard Walkthrough

Break down the PlayStation 4 UI for us. Tell us where the clock is. Tell us how the friends list will work. Tell us how to set up a wireless internet connection. Where the hell is the off button on this thing? There's a point in pre-launch console hardware hype where I just want to be spoken to, directly, in plain English. Of course, this being a European show, Spanish, German, French… several different languages would be nice too.

Now that we know the PS4's price and we've seen a huge selection of software planned for Day 1 to Year 1, we want to see how PlayStation 4 will improve upon the cross media bar and how it will utilize all that extra RAM PlayStation 3 so desperately needs now. Have you jammed the PS button on accident in the middle of a game? It's excruciating how long it takes for menus to load. Show us the future on PlayStation 4.

Gran Turismo 6 PS4 Revealed

While Polyphony and Sony have said that Gran Turismo 6 is headed to PS3 instead of PS4 because of the 70 million+ install base, we have to assume that some version of Gran Turismo 6 will race to PS4 sooner rather than later. Not to insult Drive Club or anything, but GT6 is a hugely important franchise to the most loyal PlayStation gamers. Since you won't be able to play GT6 on you PS4, it goes without saying that some edit or subtitled version of the game will have cross-over.

If Sony could make a really fast car their mascot, they would, and European gamers have a ton of love for Gran Turismo. Even a tease at Gamescom would be better than silence on this matter. With the diehard PlayStation fans eagerly jumping on the wealth of PS4 preorders still available, some kind of cross-console solution should be in place. Check out our list of five things GT6 needs to succeed to read more.

PlayStation 3 and Vita Price Drops

On September 17th, Sony will release a Grand Theft Auto V PS3 bundle with a 500 GB hard drive for $269.99. That's only $130 less than a vanilla PlayStation 4 at launch. Something has to change. With PS3s still stacked high on shelves and stock rooms at retail, Sony can aggressively move product throughout the holiday season at a brand new price point. Unveil a PlayStation 3 system for $200 with a family-friendly game (like LittleBigPlanet 2 maybe) and watch the hardware fly. The console remains one of the most affordable and versatile Blu-ray players on the market. Take down a few of those home-entertainment opponents while you're at it, Sony.

Regardless, we'd trade a PlayStation 3 price-drop for a Vita price-drop any day of the week. Even if Sony can't lower Vita's price point, they should at least announce a new "Standard" bundle that includes a beefy memory card rated at 16GB or better. The Vita situation is completely unacceptable now, and it doesn't matter how well Sony's portable and their next-generation PS4 work together if the system doesn't have better software support, more memory in the box, or really anything to make it stand out against the unstoppable 3DS.

PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita Bundle For $499

While rumors already suggest this final announcement might come true, this next-generation hardware bundle will never materialize at this price point unless Sony is already prepared to cut Vita's cost back. These final items are a one-two punch of consumer-friendly, aggressive pricing maneuvers. If Vita handhelds and PS4 consoles are designed to work together closely, then combining the two in a single box is a no-brainer.

It just comes down to whether or not Sony can do it. They've certainly got the stock of Vita lying around in warehouses and stock rooms, and they've got a hot ticket that will attract consumer attention. Even if you're not really set on buying a PlayStation Vita, but you're running around before Christmas trying to find a PS4, you could do a lot worse picking up a bundle like this for such a low price.

8 cases of defective consoles posted on NeoGAF and the console isn't even officially out until midnight. Including a review unit given to IGN. Not sure what's going on, but they must have blown through the QA process in order to make launch.  Good luck to you guys getting one.

Alright guys... can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm getting a PS4. Best Buy is running a promo where they will give you a $100 minimum trade-in (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17093&type=page&ref=199&loc=je6NUbpObpQ&siteID=je6NUbpObpQ-z1bzqlzdBPT4iqgdof9wrw) for your working 360/PS3. I'm going to trade one of my 360s in along with some accessories and games I'm not playing (along with a Kinect). Depending on how much I get for the extras, I'm either going to walk out of there with a Dual Shock 4 and a Camera and buy the system the next time Amazon is back in stock, or I might just get one there. We'll see. The wife ok'ed it!

Isn't the MW2 a slim unit too? I'd hold onto that personally, it's more likely to retain value. Not that the limited edition on those was ever particularly limited.... but yeah....

Ah, well then, I am mistaken. My line of logic (if it were a slim) was limited anyway, I can't even see my R2 unit being of much value in the future sadly. Limited edition my ass, I see a grip of them on the wall every time I walk into the store still.... Now if only I could get an original gen fully functional (backwards compatible and all that) PS3 for less than $600..... damn it all.... or even a PSP for $100 or something.... arg.... damn it all...

The PS4 Camera Automatically Broadcasts In-Game Chat

Quote
I have yet to pull the trigger on a PS Camera peripheral for my PS4, and it turns out that waiting wasn’t a bad idea. Reports by way of NeoGAF suggest that the camera is in a constant active state while plugged in; “listening” if you will for voice commands and constantly broadcasting any noise it’s able to hear. User Zatoichi’s Cane discovered this while playing a game of FIFA 14 online. He stated the PS4 microphone icon was constantly visible on the screen while playing a versus match, indicating he was actually chatting with the other player, when in fact, he wasn’t.

He went as far as to contact PlayStation support about the matter and the representative he spoke to confirmed there’s no way to disable the feature short of unplugging the device. The rep wasn’t able to elaborate as to whether or not this was a bug or a deliberate feature. Sony has yet to make official confirmation on this report, so we’ll keep this in the very likely rumor column for now.

We’ll update with more information when it becomes available. It’s likely this will be patched during an upcoming update.

UPDATE: We followed up on the matter and SCEA Support has confirmed there’s no way to disable voice commands while the PS Camera is plugged in. Basically, you’d have to either disable the voice command feature or disconnect the camera itself to stop the voice broadcast. It’s confirmed there’s no way to keep ingame players from hearing you talk without alltogether disabling voice commands or unplugging the camera. (Proof Below)

:woot!: Got one! Best Buy had a lot of PS4s. In between 50-60. Showed up 45min before opening. There was still a few left when the place opened @ 10. One guy showed up at 5 to be 3rd in line.

Was at Target just now buying my boy some birthday presents and of course, again they have PS4's in stock.   Not sure about this shortage.  Must be in the hick states.

Well well well... looks like the PS4 was quite on that wanting the cable box, tv show stuff for the PS4.  We all know they want it too just like the X1.  Wonder how Sony fans will react to this.  Probably love it, while they hate when the X1 does it.  Anyways.. glad Sony is jumping on it too.

Let's hope XB1 gets this ability soon.

The upcoming 1.70 update for PlayStation 4 adds a crucial feature that PC gamers have had for a long time: the ability to pre-load. As with Steam, once a digital game is pre-ordered via the PlayStation Store, it will start to download onto the console. That doesn’t mean you’ll be able to play the game right away. Instead, you’ll be able to play it once the game is “unlocked” on release day.

Once pre-loaded, “there will be a countdown that starts when the official time of release is announced,” SCEA director Scott McCarthy confirmed on the PlayStation.Blog. Given games like Infamous: Second Son are 20GB, it’s nice to shave off a few hours of download time and get right to playing as soon as possible.
