Title: New TV for the cucster
Post by: cuco33 on December 15, 2010, 02:57:17 PM
Yeah... so on top of being in the market for new wheel (fanatec porsche 911 gt2) and new PC (custom MAINGEAR), I also am looking into a bigger TV. The living room has a nice entertainment stand with an older Samsung CRT HDTV (720p/1080i). It was fine in my old place but the new one it stands out like a soar thumb. It's way too small and I want MOAR!!!!! The stand can hold 45" max width. Originally I was looking at a 40-42".
Don't care much for 3D, it hasn't sold me yet and I doubt it ever will. Don't care much for audio since I have my Onkyo/Paradigm/HSU 5.1 setup for that so really am looking for the best picture that will fit.

Someone on another board recommended the Panasonic TC-P46G25, which is funny because it's a 46" plazma with 44.6" wide dimension, and it JUST fits!! Looking at reviews now seems very positive with great picture, great blacks, etc. It'll be used mainly for gaming and movie/tv watching (duh, it's a tv!)

Anyone have any recommendations?

Yeah I've been reading that Panasonic's Plasmas are top notch. I'm debating between the model I was told to go with or a new Samsung LED that I saw at Costco... then if I go to Best Buy, I might have even more options lol
decisions decisions...

Told the lady by end of January I'd like the TV

now I'm not in the know, so maybe they've advanced a bit since I last checked, but plasma's tend to be useful as space heaters as well, burn electricity like a mofo, and have burn in problems, especially with HUD's from video games. I'm sure these problems have been looked into by now and advanced though, just something to be wary about/ look into. Other than that, yeah my buddies 720p plasma from a couple years ago is still one of the best pictures I've ever seen, beautiful blacks/colors! (That's right, I said 720p!)

I heard the burn in issues with tvs, especially plasmas, is a thing of the past. The rest though could be true

well I've heard they've done a lot to prevent draining electricity and the massive amounts of heat output. So maybe the issues as hand are resolved. Just "buyer beware" ya know? It sucks to spend that kinda money and find out there was a better option ya know?

Oh and the heat output thing wouldn't necessarily be a negative if I didn't live in so cal, it was awesome in the winter! (Just god awful in the summer)

Definitely bro, it's why I like to take my time when I make a big purchase like this. If it were a $20 item, I wouldn't be caring much but a g note or more... different story

Sometimes it can be fun and I think the best part is when you finally have it all hooked up in the home. Since super bowl is around the corner, there's been some deals all over. I'm doing some e-shopping right now but if a good deal pops up on one of the TVs I have my eye on, I'll be making the plunge  :P

Neighbor downstairs has a sams club membership, i have Costco. Costco had a nice Sammy LED but I missed out on the sale ($200+ off!). I keep reading that plasma is still the way to go but back lit LED tvs are just as good. Remember when TVs were easy to shop for and your option was SIZE and BRAND only!?

my plasma is not bad for gaming.    there's all sorts of burn in protection built in to the tv.         from white screening it to multi color screens that pop on, to also the big one for me, is the screen will move a pixel or 2 from time to time, however i set it.          you guys know how much i game, and i've had NO burn in problems.

burn in for plasma.... that's so mid 2000's... ;)

i've been silently looking at TV's too i just don't want my wife to know (i'm actually whispering in my head while i type this) looking at the Samsung PN63C8000 plasma. but i just don't want to get the buzzing that some people have heard, not to mention i live in a high elevation city. i've been telling my wife we need 40 eggs and 50 pounds of rice (yes i'm still whispering in my head) at SAMs Club just so i can check out their TVs. or i'll say i'll go and pick her up some tampons at Target then i'll stop buy BB because it's right next door. ( i don't even know why i'm whispering in my head since my wifes at work?)

If RDR is on sale I'll get that, if not I might just get a copy of LA Noire for now... OR... Uncharted 2 GOTY edition since the last times I was at GS, Walmart, Kmart and BB they only had the normal version and not the GOTY

I'm going TODAY to get a new TV with my sis. I need her truck and I'm getting a Samsung UN46D6000, 46" 1080P LED-LCD.  +G

It's on sale at BB now, under $1k, normally $1300 and Costco has their version for $100 more (could probably price match but... fuck it). I'm not sold on 3D and my understand is the 6300 only brings a shitty web browser and to be honest... I don't need no fucking shitty ass web browser on my TV. Hopefully I get a unit without the flashlighting or ghosting. Might just spend money on the 3 yr replacement plan and in 2.75 yrs later "something happened with the TV"  :bL

The TV I have now is way old and way too small for my living room. Old Samsung CRT HDTV either 30 or 32". In my old apartment it was a small room so it was fine but I haven't been fine with it since I moved to the new spot. It's still working like a champ and I'm amazed I spent like $800 when new lol

I thought about a Panasonic Plasma but seeing this Sammy LED tv in person... drooooooooooooooooool...

No plasma!  At least I couldn't.  I have a large sliding glass door behind my couch and the glare on my tv is horrible.  Even on the LCD, the plasma would be unwatchable.  Hmm... I have a 46" Samsung 1080p Full HD not sure what model # though.  Its lovely.  The only downside is my controller kinda sucks and it has no buttons on the tv, they're the touchscreen type or something and when I try and turn it off at night its hard to know what button I'm pushing.  But its also nice to not have to see any buttons.

I've got a 55" LG LED 1080P and it has those same touch buttons.  We actually thought it had no buttons at all ;420 for about 4 or 5 days.  The wifey was dusting and went over the touch part and the TV came on.  Probably was in the owners manual, but who reads those?

Hmm...from looking at pictures of your model it appears that you have the exact same tv I do!  But it only appears that way, yours is newer than mine so they're not identical.  But they have the same stand, and that clear border around the frame of the tv, and it looks like your buttons run horizontally along the bottom right while mine go vertical on the right side.  Very nice purchase, you're going to love it.
