Title: Your Fish Tanks...
Post by: miDnIghtEr20C on September 19, 2009, 05:33:44 PM
ok.. i'm copying and pasting most my post from the old site for this one.  ;)

here we go!

Quote
i just got a HUGE tank from my work, where they used to keep the lobsters in.  this suckers around 125 gallons or more.  i'm going to transfer my fish from my 60 gallon into it.  i took a picture of the "before".  that way, you guys can see it all shitty looking, and then when it's finally all set up in the house, you all can see the final product.   heres the pic....

anyway's, anyone else have a fish tank?  post a pic.  let's talk about it! 8-)

the progress, lot's of sweat, and some blood.  wow, what a pain in the ass to do.  we had to cut off the top of the tank where the stainless steel goes around.  just the viewing side.  it's a double pain tank so the glass was real foggy inbetween.  very hard to get to.  but we got it.  took the top off, all the rubber and glue, cleaned out the glass, put the top back on, yada, yada, yada,  the dishes are done man.
Quote
it was time to take some sweet ass pics of my tank.. and some of the fish..  so here you go!

that red fish above is called a, flame hawk...

that's tommy the tomato clown fish, as he swims by his house... the anemone!

that is what they call a, tube anemone.
Quote
so, my roommate is getting rid of his tank, and gave me a few rocks, and another tube anemone.   so i put the rocks and the anemone in my smaller tank... the 20 galloner, and have now set that one up, much better then it's ever been.   the only occupant of that tank is my big, bad ass, maroon clown fish.   i added a couple crabs and gonna buy some other stuff later for it.

my big tank that was at the start of this thread, had an accident, and water got in between the two front panes of glass.   there's algae everywhere, and i can't fix it.   so now, i have to switch things over to the ol 60 gallon tank.     so that goes down on friday.  i spent all day today, doing up the 20 gallon, and doing a big living room change and putting the 60 gallon as well.   lol... confusing, well.. here are some pictures of what the shit i'm talking about. ;)

Here's a picture of the 20 gallon from distance.

The Maroon Clown.  She's one pissed off fish!  How do I know it's a girl?  She digs with her tail!  A characteristic of the female Maroon. ;)

A picture of the new Tube Anemone.   Crazy looking. :o

Another angle of the 20 gallon tank.

This is the tank that's ruined right now.  You can barely see in it.  >:(

The new tank is going there.  Actually, it's my older tank.. good thing I kept it around.

Different perspective of how the tanks will match each other.  It all goes down on Friday... Stay tuned for the finishing pics!
Quote
this is going to take me a couple days to finish.   i'm about to put all my rocks in, but i still need to do my main filters.   i'm running a cheesy ass filter right now.   actually, it's not cheesy... just not what i need.   but it will work for the time.   pics to come of the before.

ok... here is a picture of some stuff.    here is from the 20 gallon tank.  the first two pictures are of the "Yellow Headed" Moray Eel...

there he is.... the picture is a little hard to see, but there's his yellow head.

a close up of that monster.   scary looking fish.  i'm a little nervous to put my hand in there.  :-/

so far that's what i've done.   i'm about to add the rest of the rocks right now.   well.    here i go...  ???

****UPDATE****

ok, one half of the tank is almost finished.  i still don't have my main filteration going yet, but i hope to get that done tomorrow after work.   i have that one filter going right now in the tank on the right side.   that's why there's no rock on that side yet...

Quote
ok... the tank is still not 100% finished.  i'm still doing up my last of the pumps, and then i can finish off putting the rest of the rocks in, and making the rock formation a beautiful sight to behold.   i have been told i'm very good at creating reef, and rock setups for fresh water and salt water tanks.

one of my damsels.

the star fish...

the lil damsel(blue fish) and tommy, the tomato clown fish ;)

random picture of the rock.   there's some water mushrooms in there if you can see.

lil damsel looking all bad ass.   he's actually the whipping boy.

close up of the shrooms.

this is a few of the fish together.   you can see the star fish cruising on the bottom too.  i've had that thing for 2 years or more.  he's my oldest "fish"

ok... well, hopefully the tank will be complete REAL soon.  then i can get the full tank in some shots, and all the other shit i have to do.   hope ya'll enjoy!  :)
Quote
Well... everything is finally complete!  ;D  This is the evolution of my tank switch.  Lots of pictures coming, so I hope you're not using dial up. ;)
 The beginning...

The filtration setup:
I'm running an overflow system on a 60 gallon tank, with a 20 gallon sump.  So that's giving me a total of 80 gallons (take a little due to sand and rock weight)  Here's some pics of the setup.  The first are of the overflow box and the last is the sump, and the stuff in it, like the heater and a protein skimmer.

Now, enjoy the beautiful fish of our awesome ocean reefs.  I LOVE owning my OWN, piece of ocean.  :)

That is the Midas Blenny.  Very fun to watch.  He's always putting on a show, and watching everyone.

My little Fridmani Pseudochromis.  The camera doesn't even do it's color justice.  It's much more of a neon pink.  Very expensive for such a small fish.  I bought it half it's size now, for about 40 bucks.

This is 6LW.  Real name, The Six Line Wrasse.  Beautiful colors and markings.  Very nice fish!

6LW with my Yellow Tail Damselfish.  Cool colors I think.  8-)

The Flame Hawk.  He's the red fish, and my other Damsel.  Can you see the Midas Blenny in this shot?  He camoed himself.

Close up of the Flame Hawk....

So that's it.  It's done!  Now to add Corals, and Anemones and that kind of shit.   Of course more pictures to come when that happens.  It's my pleasure to bring this bit of the Ocean, into all of your homes. :)  :D  ;D  8-)  8-)  8-)  8-)

Awesome stuff, miD.  You have some great set-ups.  I bought a 65 gallon tank which I plan to set up soon.  Freshwater only, though.

I'm not ambitious enough to go the saltwater route.  Although, they typically make for more beautiful tanks.

you can easily get some fresh water fish that rival salt in beauty.   get yourself some Cichlids.   65 gallons is a good size for them.. and they are smart.. and have personalities.

new tank gets here tomorrow!   update on it's size though.. it's not a 175... it's a 125!        still very nice!     and i once had a 125 before.... i don't feel as scared now.  :D

You were gonna be burried in that tank at one time as I recall. Are you going with salt water? or doing the fresh route? Replacing or adding to the collection? Trying to picture where you are putting it. Congrats, thats quite a gift!

going salt... it's an acrylic tank.. awesome filtration..   i only have 2 fish to put in it though from the old tank... so it's going to be a whole new adventure on whatever credit card has room on it for new fish!  :D     you know i'm not scared to put 10 on 1, 20 on another, and 15 on another!    i'll do it to get a couple nice fish.      125 boy.. this is a show tank though.. not 6 feet long like my old.. it's 4 1/2 feet long.. fucking deep and tall!     pictures up tomorrow while it's going on.. and when it's up!

tomorrow is going to be a beautiful day.    dare i say it... i'm actually happy?

Nice, I started phase one of my tank restoration today.  I did find a piece of polyp that might work for you, its not attached to a rock or anything and has already spread out enough to colonize the rock I wanted it to.  I think i pulled a couple of pounds of slimy, green algae out today...yuck!

Aight, heres a few pics of the tank "partially clean". Still a lot of algae and crap in there and I can't get a good picture but it looks a lot better than the pictures show.  And I got a piece of the polyp that can go in your tank Midnighter, whenever you want.

Starfish are a pain in the ass to keep alive.  They always have started to disintegrate on me rather quickly, sad...so sad.

i bought 5 Super Tongan Nassarius Snails today... here is one that was on the glass... and then posing for a couple pics.

info on the Snail can be found here... http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=497+526+1763&pcatid=1763 (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=497+526+1763&pcatid=1763)

They are a great part of your "Clean up crew" for your tank.

And I also bought a Porcupine Puffer, who we have named.. "Sean Puff Diddy Puffer".. or something like that.. .Lol.. anyways, he is real hard to get a picture of.  He's constantly hovering and moving around... here's a try.  I'll try to get better pics later.

Noooo!  A porcupine puffer!?!  Those things are cool as sh*t but oh man, he'll eat EVERYTHING! Crabs, snails, corals...all gone!  Don't listen to the fish guys.  The one I had was as curious as a cat, he'd just bite stuff for fun.  Hopefully mine was just weird like that...good luck.
Title: Re: My Fish Tanks...
Post by: miDnIghtEr20C on May 28, 2010, 02:01:53 PM
ya... the dude said he would be ok with most of my stuff that i have in there right now... we shall see.. he's way small right now.    very small.. i'm hoping that will make it to where he grows up knowing everyone and everything in the tank, and will leave most stuff alone.    i will keep him well fed.    i just hope my arrow crab doesn't get it from him... come on arrow crab.. grow big!

oh.. and not to mention Jenny fell in love with him at the fish store because of the way he acted to her.. following her finger back and forth.. GREAT personality.     we'll see.   if he becomes a problem.. then i'll do what has do be done.

Yup, I loved mine with his pretty blue eyes too...don't be fooled!  I'd get rid of him now.  You'll fall in love with him and won't be able to put anything else in, new fish will draw his curiosity and become toothing toys.  The guy at the fish store told me mine would be fine, after I had already had him and saw what he could do.  You're arrow crab will be gone very soon...along with all of your new snails.  And now I can't give you that polyp either.   ::)

hmmmm... we shall see.   i think he'll be fine.

remember this quote so you can quote it when he tears my tank apart!   but..lol.. i don't mind.   if he does.. i'll get him out and trade him in eventually.    i'm not too worried.

oh.. and right now, his eyes are bigger than half his body.   so cute!

ps.. i'm going to get an Emperorator Angel as well.. and i hear they eat some corals too... i guess it just all depends on your rock setup, and fishes personalities.

oh .. and still bring the polyp.. i'll find a spot for it that's nice and safe!

needless to say.. i have fixed up the power head with lot's... AND LOT'S of sponge padding.. that, that will NEVER happen again.          i'm pretty bummed though right now.

Bought a new fish.. I  call him, "The Purps".. he is a Purple Dottyback.    he moves so quick, it's hard to get a picture of him.. my old one can be found on the first page of this thread... but this is a new one.  info can be found here about those... http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+38+170&pcatid=170 (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+38+170&pcatid=170)  here's a blurry pic of mine.. kinda cool looking though that his eyes are looking right at me.

and Szabada, he gave me a piece of one of his polyps, and i believe it's a Starburst Polyp... http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=597+599+738&pcatid=738 (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=597+599+738&pcatid=738)   hopefully that will grab onto the rock, and start to blossom on more of the rock, and spread in the tank.

here's a cool looking picture of the Arrow Crab grabbing some Mysis Shrimp, and feasting on them... you'll notice his serrated beak that he uses to spear small slow moving fish, or whatever else he can.

Red Legged Hermit Reef Crab here on a piece of coral doing it's cleaning job.

side view of the tank.. i don't know why...

the deep blue A... a cave in the Reef miDnIghtEr20C.  ;)

the flamehawk "Steven", taking a look at me while i snap a photo of him...

so far so good with the tank... couple snails and a star fish and a puffer fish dead... but besides that.. the redone up tank is cruising... until next check in.   :)

just a little update on the new tank... not many fish in it yet still... and still they're small.   i like to start small, and watch them grow and get their own personalities, and all that jazz, and learn about them... anyhoo...

here's a new video taken with my slide phone.

in the tank... 2 chromis, 1 tomato clown, 1 blue & yellow damsel, 1 flame hawk, 1 Purple Dottyback, 1 arrow crab, about 9 reef red clawed, and blue and red clawed crabs... 2 Super Tongan Nassarius Snail and 3 Turbo Snails.    75lbs of Live Rock and adding more... and about 90 lbs of live sand.

125 Gallon, feeding time...(not exciting) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME5PVwp-rtQ#)

hey mid how much of a pain in the ass is a 125 gal tank? we just got our 40 gl tank nice and pretty but we might be getting this 125+ gal tank. well probably have the big tank as a fresh watertank because im sure salt waters a huge bitch to do on a tank that size if youve never done a salt water one before, and well turn the smaller one into asalt water one as a start, any advise/ suggestions?

ya, start off a bit smaller with the salt.. use your 40 for that.       i'll give you more info on how to start the salt water one, when i have more time to type....

and for the freshwater.. i'll need more info on what you want to get and have for the 125 gallon tank... that will still be hard too... but it's usually at the start that it's the toughest...

but remember.. .ONE little disease or something wrong in the tank can affect your whole tank setup, and water and everything.... so you have to be on top of it pretty much everyday.

but if you have a huge tank like that going... why wouldn't you stop by it to look at everything at least once a day.  ;)

Before you start up the saltwater tank, make sure you clean it out really really good.  Both tanks are going to be expensive to start up, but with saltwater just make sure you get a lot of live rock.  Its expensive as hell but well worth it because it will act as a natural filter for your water, as long as it doesn't contain any kind of harmful organisms like aptasias - they look cool at first but are like fleas.  Nobody likes fleas.

butum a wtf is live rock?? and live sand?
Title: Re: My Fish Tanks...
Post by: Szabada on August 16, 2010, 11:34:00 AM
Live rocks and sand are basically taken from the ocean.  They have living organisms on and in them.  Live sand will have all of the microorganisms that will help set up an infrastructure of sorts in the water.  It is mostly crushed coral and stuff.  The rocks themselves are normally grown in little farms out in the coral reefs and can take years to culture.  There are different methods to bringing them into your tank, many recommend a type of incubation period in brackish water (mixture of salt and freshwaters) to get rid of most living things to avoid unwanted critters, but I've always just put them right in my tank.  The more life the merrier for me.  With exception to the Aptasias.  they look like little sea anemones, but they aren't.  They're a pain in the ass. If you see any in the tank where you want to buy your rock...don't buy it!   Yipee! :P   Salltwater is so much better than fresh.  You can spend a lot of money, but mines basic.  I even have a few rocks I found on the beach while surfing.  And thats probably what gave me the Algae problem i have.   But they're cool.  I don't think its illegal to have taken them... :-X

ahhhh makes sence, i get it now. well shit i dont even know if they have that kinda stuff any where around here. i might hvae to go the beach after all this year, ( at night). hmmmmm must look more into this stuff, seems like a GIANT headache.   fresh water seems so much easier,  plus the kids are loving their spongebob themed tank, with red tetras, and harleyquinn tetras, and some other kind of fish that look liek sharks but theyre not.

You can buy everything you need at any fish store.  Most of the saltwater stuff is shipped in from indonesia and fiji like places anyways.   You don't have to be by the coast to get it.

oh i know its just i think ill have to go to a bigger town to get it, there are only 2 stores in town that sell anykind of fish stuff, one place is a mom and pop store that doesnt really do salt water, and the other all they have are the sand in bags  and salt water fish, i dont know if they have those rock things.

20 bucks or more per bag... i could of swore though that it was for 10lbs, or 20lbs of sand... not only 5.

Well, I put a couple hours into my tank yesterday and cleaned it up a lot.  It was nasty!  Still pretty dirty but much better.  And I fixed one of my lights, still have two compact florescent lights in there but only one of them was working.  I almost went out and bought a new setup but messed around with it instead and found out it was only a 99 cent switch that was broken.  Sweeet!  So now I have both lights running again, and just like Dz says about video games but especially true for fish tanks and life, Lighting is VERY important.  Most of my polyp corals are gone, but a few remain and I'm looking to gain it all back again.  Let there be LIGHT!

And the Grouper.  This guy's funny, he swims to the corner whenever I walk in the kitchen expecting me to feed him and goes NUtso when I open the freezer where his food is kept.  I'll get some more photos of him as I clean it up more.

The grass does suck, but as long as I keep on it it'll be ok.  Just like mowing a lawn I guess, if I ignore it it gets to the point like it was and I don't want to mess with it at all.  I've had those fish for over 3 years (I think).  Its always hard to add new fish with these two guys.  The next thing I want to add though is a Lionfish.  I've always loved those things.  We'll see.  I have to take some more care of the tank before adding anything else.

how about this.  I'll put a Picasso trigger in my tank, if you put a clown trigger in yours  ;D.  The Clown trigger is my favorite fish of them all, but hot damn are they mean fuckers.  Unless you get extremely lucky and get a really shy one.  Those and puffer fish.  Both are awesome but bullies in the aquarium communities.

So I finally got back to the fish store and bought 10 hermit crabs, 5 turbo snails and this little guy.  He's a Sea Hare.  Pretty freaking cool, and kinda ugly as well.  He's basically a sea slug with this little antenna like prob things on his head that look like rabbit ears.  I'm going to get some more snails soon and probably add a lion fish before too long.   But I'm going to be very picky about picking one up, it'll have to be exactly what I want.  Oh, its head is on the left in both pictures.

Sooo... apparently that black slug with the blue spots has laid some eggs in my tank  :o.  I found it today on a filter tube kinda close to where it sucks in water.  It wasn't moving much and there was this worm looking brown thing all around it... kinda scared me.  Were its guts being sucked out or something?  Or is it being attacked by a worm, but what the hell is a worm doing up there?  ALl kinds of stuff go through my head.  So I turn off the filter and pull the tube for a closer look, but unfortunately the slug jumped ship and fell to the bottom of the tank.  And yep, they're little brown eggs, looks like a piece of spaghetti.  I think its time for a trip to the fish store.

Yeah, its awesome.  The snails are really going to town on my algae, but I think I'll still get a few more.  I've even done a little more research on the Sea Hares and true they'll eat algae, but they'll also eat the waste put off by other creatures.  Nice!

I went out and bought another slug thats similar just in case the other one isn't able to fertilize the eggs as well.  Maybe this one will be able to?  We'll see... I also put sponges on all filters so if little slug babies do pop out they'll have a better chance of survival instead of getting sucked up right away.

Bought a Coral Beauty Dwarf Angelfish today, (the blue one) and a "Flame Angel" (the red one).   Beautiful looking fish.   Expensive though.  ???   So let's hope they stick around for a while.

The new Angels in the 125. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za8rEOiJcAE#)
THERE HAS BEEN A MURDER IN MY TANK!  :ninja:

So it looks like they co-existed for a Year, an the Flame Angel has KILLED the Coral Beauty.

I used to see them fight each other at times, but it was ALWAYS the Coral Beauty who was the aggressor, and the King over the Flame Angel.  Wow did something change in the last few weeks.  I hadn't noticed them fighting anymore then usual, but I also am guilty of not paying attention as much as I should of either.

Long story short... Angel fish can only be kept one per tank most of the time, unless you are rocking a really big tank.  I thought my 125 was big enough.  Either it wasn't, or I don't have enough rock.

Goodnight sweet Prince Coral Beauty.... You shall be missed.

All hail the new King of lake miDnIghtEr20C... The Flame Angel! :jedi:

it's looking good brother.   start out small and easy, because if something goes bad, you will learn from the mistake, and the mistake will happen at a smaller degree, instead of a huge one, with a big tank.

watch your plants get dug up, and start to float to the top one day. ;)  also, look for some driftwood some time at the pet store.  they probably sell it.   i'll show you some good setup styles of my old freshwater tanks when you get here on the 4th!   i can't wait for the 4th!

enjoy..

lol.. what are you talking about?   that's how it's supposed to be!!!!   you want those fish, i keep telling you, they need caves!    fish tanks are supposed to have caves if you like those fish.. if not.. stick with 1 fish, or change to tetra fish... you don't need any rocks with those fish.

tank in video was a 15 gallon btw.     and ps.. my tank looked far from crappy with all that in there.     and i had lot of fish.      oh well.. at least you'll have one fish in that tank.

the blue one is the girl... the yellow the boy... trust me, the yellow will take over.    please please please take like 3 small as ceramic pots from your work.. buy them.. what are they a buck each if that?    and put them in there to make some more caves.   you can make it look really cool.   then when the girl feels like she has enough territory, she will leave him be...

he will recover, and then kick her ass.   he is the male.   trust me!

but i thought that tank was you and the boys?    my lady couldn't care less what i put in the fish tank with rocks or not... maybe with the fish, but not with the decor.    she trust my judgement on what the fish need.     if i was you, i'd go the route i was saying with the clown loaches and sucker fish... that way you don't have to worry about caves.   either that, or get the tetra fish where you can get a lot in a 10 gallon tank, and you don't have to worry about aggressiveness from the fish.   they'll all live in harmony, and you can have a lot more fish in there and not worry about rocks.

Animal Cruelty!!!

Tank looks good, but freshwater tanks to me are dirty... and they smell.  A dirty saltwater tank still looks kinda good to me, depending.  A dirty freshwater tank always looks horrrrrible.  I'm all Saltwater and never going back.  Not because I keep my tanks dirty all the time, even though they do get that way sometimes.  Its just more of the water clarity and such.  When my tank got over run with that algae it was horrible, everywhere!  But the water was still crystal clear.  Try getting that in a freshwater tank, not going to happen.

You can probably even use some lava rocks or something along that line.  I don't know for sure, but you don't have to actually buy all of this stuff from a pet/fish store.

Lol.. well, you're fucked either way.  Those rocks cost some money, that's why I showed you the other video of some cheap clay pots for a small tank like yours and mine in that first video.

You won't have to spend much since your tank is small... but that rock is a bit more on the expensive side.   You can find them at fish stores.  Don't go to the pet co's.   If you can find a fish store, then you'll be in luck, and able to get some of the smaller size for your tank and stack them.   Don't be scared to have them up against the glass a bit on the back of the tank.    You need them for balance.   Cichlids dig, and rocks can fall, and will fall.

But once you get some more caves, you'll see.

I don't think I have any pictures of my new tank up, so here we go.

Just put in a new fish, a Blue Eyed Tang.  With the passing of the grouper the tank will be taking a much more friendly approach.  A little dirty, but cleaning up quickly.  I had a bit of an algae bloom after the Grouper died... I was unable to get to him in the tank without a major project, and by the time I was going to do it the Nassarius snails had already gotten to him and pretty much taken care of it.   :pickit:

29 gallon Oceanic Biocube, a bit expensive but it has everything one would need.

I took a bunch of rocks out as well.  I'm sure I'll put some more in, and get some more fish as well.  These two do well, but I need more to help eat a bunch of leftover food and whatnot.  I'll update as I get/do more.

One problem is it doesn't come with lights, not sure what kind you will need.  If you're going to be going with a fresh or salt setup.  Thought you were going back to fresh...

Not really sure what kind of filtration it has, probably just like my new one.  Has the charcoal pad, then the bio balls, going to a power head pushing it all back in.  The pad gets clogged with algae, suffocating the powerhead making bubbles blow out in spurts.  Its annoying.  While I was gone in... where was I?  Oh shit, while we were in Hawaii this happened and the parents in-law put in more water thinking it was low and it over flowed.  hah.  A problem I've never had with the bio wheels.  If you stay on it this should be able to be avoided though.

Something about these tanks.  I bought an expensive ass one, I think I paid a little more than this one for my current setup.  It has its pros and cons.  But it also comes with fully enclosed compact fluorescent and LED lights with fans while the CF's are running.  That really sold me on it.  It is only 29 gallons though.  It just seems so small though.  Not sure how much I like it, and kind of wish I hadn't spent so much on it now.  Not sure if you will be the same way, but thats how I am.  You'll also have to get a stand for it too right?  Doubt it comes with the stand in the picture...

Rambled a bit, sorry.  Looks good, but I would try and find one in a store so you can look at it up close and stuff before you buy it online.  Return shipping will probably suck.

Honestly, if I could do it all again, I would have rather overhauled my filtration systems and kept my bigger tank running.

szabada... what do you think of this, and the price???!?!?!?

Dug around more.  For whatever reason, you won't be getting one of those tanks pictured (only the bottom one).  You'd be getting this one... the same one as the reviews from the walmart ad. Most likely without the stand.  The stand will probably be between $50-100 more, just a guess.

Unless you somehow found a glitch in their system.  Because when I looked through the actual suppliers Amazon page, the one you show doesn't come up.   Only the hexagon one.  The one that looks like the one in your picture goes for $600.

ya weird.. i don't know what's up with that page.   i wasn't looking at that hexagon one i thought... i was looking at what i thought was a 55 gallon acrylic tank and stand... i have the lights and pumps and all that shit.. .but ya.. weird.

oh well, gonna go into some fish stores too, just to see what's new.    also was looking on craigslist... saw some good deals, just i never trust used tanks like that unless i know the person.   who knows.. there's some good deals

You better go 80 to 125 gallons, and you know it.  If you get a 55 you will just upgrade in a year.  If your going the cichlid route that is.

problem solved... went to pacific reef, dude still remembers me... he's going to hook me up with a 60 gallon acrylic, and a stand for only 360!    i have the pump, sump, over flow shit.. all that!    the 60 gallon glass is sold for 79.99... so why not spend 120 more for the acrylic for life!

now i'll switch my 5 salt water fish over to the new 60..., and then clean out the 125 for a new cichlid fresh water huge tank!!!!!!

things are in motion for the new tank, and the new freshwater tank.  just bought this as a tester... gonna try to get around 140 lbs of sand,... gonna mix.   but this looked cool.   if it looks good when it gets here, i'll order another 40lbs of it.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Caribsea-Eco-Complete-Cichlids-Gravel-40-lbs-Set-of-2/19245225 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Caribsea-Eco-Complete-Cichlids-Gravel-40-lbs-Set-of-2/19245225)

this one is pretty pricey.. maybe i'll throw one bag of this in too..   http://www.walmart.com/browse/fish/decor/5440_202074_227591/?_refineresult=true&browsein=true&facet=type%3AGravel+%26+Sand (http://www.walmart.com/browse/fish/decor/5440_202074_227591/?_refineresult=true&browsein=true&facet=type%3AGravel+%26+Sand)||price%3A%2420+-+%2450||price%3A%2450+-+%24100&ic=16_0&path=0%3A5440%3A202074

but they dig, so i don't want it to fuck my pump up.

That gravel looks nice.  I don't know, that old sand style we used was pretty sharp looking....but then again I could see some big boys moving those rocks and shells around.  Big decision, good choice by getting a tester first.
Title: Re: My Fish Tanks...
Post by: miDnIghtEr20C on March 10, 2013, 03:01:42 PM
i'm going to get that old school style too.    but this isn't plastic coated like those old ones.  this is the real deal, and will help with some ph stuff, and things like that.
Quote
Minereralogically complete. Contains Aragonite. Maintains the high pH African Cichlids need without the constant addition of chemicals. Buffers automatically for the life of the aquarium. Adds calcium, magnesium, carbonate and more. Dark color encourages the richest coloration in fishes. Unique composition re-creates the African Rift Lake environment. High internal porosity for maximum biological capacity - keep more fish healthier... longer!

Biologically complete! Contains live water- purifying bacteria that makes cycling a new aquarium faster and safer! 4 equals 1. You would have to buy 4 bags of ordinary gravel to equal the surface area available for water purifying bacteria in this one bag of Eco-Complete African Cichlid Substrate! Creates a natural biological balance to discourage nuisance algae. No rinsing! Packed in water conditioning solution for immediate results.
but we'll see... a light dusting of this on top, with a tad smaller type or something.

i just can't have little grains clogging the pump.   that would suck.

bought my new 60 gallon acrylic today with stand.... dude is bringing it by tonight.    bought it at pacific reef... great place, and friendly staff.... anyoo...  i'll take some pictures of it and post them tonight when it gets here.

in other news, my gravel came in today, and I'M DIGGING IT'S STYLE!    Too bad one of the bags leaked, 1 of 2 it's looking.. pretty pissed about that, but that's why it was a trial purchase!      i will buy more from the actual fish store.     here's what it looks like.    pretty cool... very lake.

$15, you have to have the copepods in your tank for them to survive.  You'll see them on your glass at night or stuck to filter media sometimes. They look like little shrimp dudes.  I know your tank used to have them...

maybe live plants that float on the top... you know how they dig, so they'll uproot everything, but maybe some that floats on top... and the weaker fish can have shelter up there too.

Loady Smurf and myself did a rock setup and sand in the new 125 freshwater.   I still need many more rocks... I have so much room.

Putting together the 125 Gallon, Freshwater Tank. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihO6RPkR9OA#)

I want my 2 minutes and 19 seconds back...

Ugh, you even used the same recycled comment on my video on youtube.   What did you expect?   It was a tank setup of rocks and gravel. There was nothing in the tank, and then was filled up with sand and rock.

You can't put freshwater fish in a new tank right away... need to let it cycle.

True, but I believe in the time lapse video of you "setting up the tank" I believe I see the ladder move more times, with nothing else happening than anything actually happening to the tank...  and I think it's quite hilarious that I put the same comment everywhere the video was shown.  Let the potential viewers be warned! NoTHING happens!   Nothing!  But the ladder being moved around.  And a couple of rocks go in... and the lighting changes a lot.  Almost gives you a headache.

you must be linked to a different video then.   because it shows the tank completely empty to start, then sand goes in, and then rocks on top.      shows the lighting changed in between and a few poses by me and smurf.

meh... i see nothing go to a full looking setup.    well, half the rocks at least..need to buy some more.   it's boring as hell to watch, never said it was awesome.    it's just a tank setup...lol, like it says.

these guys are doing alright so far.   still acting like kids and having fun.   not too much aggression yet.   Kenyi, (yellow) is the King so far, followed by the Johanni (blue dark blue horizontal stripes)    fun stuff.   That Red Fin Tropheus is up there too.  Have a female Auratus not shown, who might be second in command.  Saw her run the Johanni one time from an area.   Might just be that rock though.

still need to get a livingstoni, and try to find an elongatus... aka diamond boy, if you remember that sweet fish.  I have 20 total fish...... 14 are cichlids.

there's room for a couple more.    or did you mean rocks?   because i'm going to buy more driftwood and stack the other side more too... and some more slate here and there.    i like that they have a good room to swim on the left top, and many many rocks to hide in down low.

Came across a beautiful Male Auratus today.... picked him up because my tank could use a new fish, and putting a new one in now he needs to be tough.  These guys are as tough as they come.  Right away he took on the second King of the tank and squared off.   He's the Black one with the white stripe down the middle.  But the Male Johanni the blue one, defeated him fast.   He's the number 2 bad ass.

i clean them around every 3 weeks to a month.    i do around 20 gallons of a water change, and right now that is all.     one of the filters is mechanical meaning it's cleaning the water with carbon and blah blah blah... the second filter is biological that is keeping all the good stuff naturally from the tank and putting it back in the water, keeping the water at a great condition.

Him now... BTW.. Archie 2 is the King of the tank, followed by Jet Set here, and my Male Auratus share a weird 2nd place tie... Followed close by my Male Kenyi.

I believe some can go longer, that's for sure... but 7 is for sure a great amount of years for a "stupid" fish.  I can't believe he lasted that long.     I think his type the usual is 3 to 5.. so i'll take 7 out of him.

now tommy the tomato clownfish is left as the oldest in the tank.  they came at the same time.   we shall see how long he goes for!

Not supposed to, but he's small and those worms will take care of him.  Keeping him there is liking having his ashes sprinkled in the tank to me.   Ha... ya, they'll be ok with him in there.

Poor guy.  But yeah, 7 years is a long time for a tank fish.  A long time...

I had my grouper for, shit... 5 years maybe?  I don't even know.  It was a long ass time.  And he even made it through 3 moves.

I've had fish die in the back of the tank or in holes where you can't get to, and as long as you have a decent cleaning crew they'll take care of it no problem.  Its better than flushing it down the toilet.

new tank gets here tomorrow!   update on it's size though.. it's not a 175... it's a 125!        still very nice!     and i once had a 125 before.... i don't feel as scared now.  :D

edit... also.. i've always thought this tank was 125 gallons.   finally i decided to measure it and then google results.  60(L)x18(W)x30(H) shows the results to be 140 gallon tank... I've been treating it with chems when I do water changes that way too...   Well... looks like time to add more stuff now a days!  Whoops!    140 gallon breaks my record of having a 125 gallon long ago.   Just wish that 60 inch, 5 foot length was 72 inches for a 6 foot long... knock that height down to 24 inches and widen that 18 inches to 24 inches.   Giving me a nice 2 feet wide 2 feet tall tank at 6 feet long.   Mmmm.. love those long tanks.

Added 2 new T-12 lights.   Wanted to brighten the tank up.  Bottom picture is old lights by their lonesome.  My tank is 30 inches high, so I needed more light to get down there.

Gonna buy a lot of fish and see what happens sooner than later.. they are cheap these cichlids.. compared to saltwater way cheap.    I'm going to name my fish after each of you on this site...so prepare to see what fish you are going to be.

Mine will be the one with a beer gut.  ;voltan

And the first named fish of the new batch is an "Electric Yellow" Labidochromis Caeruleus (Lions Cove)... his name is....

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

He is the only Yellow fish that you see in this video at this time.  There will be a couple more yellow ones in there, but he is the first.  He was running the tank at Pet Smart, and has two egg spots on the anal fin meaning to me that he will be a tough fish.   He's doing real good in the tank so far.  Also has black bands on the pec fins, anal fin and dorsal fins.   Awesome looking juvenile electric yellow.  High hopes he will look grand as he matures.  At the 1:59 mark of the vid you can see lil Voltan start punking guys around him.    Oh.. and my beautiful Frontosa makes an appearance at the very end of video.

Mmmmkay.. now that I have more time to post, now that I'm home from work.  This is what I'm getting.  Or at least what I think I'm getting!   Ha.. I started to lose track.  He's (Dave) getting me all Males... or trying his best to.  A couple are still too small to tell, but let's hope for 95% of them to be Males.  F1 means that the parents of the fish were caught wild.  Both of them.  So they're the off spring of wild caught African fish.

Wish me luck!   It's going to be an interesting Year.  I plan to go 200 gallon next Year, so I'm hoping they all make it until then.   But as fish keeping goes, you lose some here and there at times.  You just never know what will happen.

Pseudotropheus polit is a small, tough, nasty little mbuna. The males have a magnificent color pattern with the females having a kind of rusty color. When the males feel threatened they can change their color to a dull grey/blue instantly.

Ps. Williamsi is the type species of the genus. They are found all over the lake and are one of the bigger species and it is believed that all of the unidentified williamsi types may in fact belong to a single species with a wide distribution. Males from this species are noted for a rich orange color and blue lips. Females can vary from brownish-yellow to grey, but they all have two rows of black spots.

Grabbing a tank of Craigslist I believe... if it looks good in person.  180 gallon acrylic.  6 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2 feet tall.   Regular price is around $1400... And apparently is a "Peninsula Tank"   Got a very nice price.  Dude says no leaks and everything runs great.   I need to get the piping for it though and make a stand.  I will do that.  That is cheap to do.  the tank is the main thing.  Dude says they're having their first kid and need to make room and no more time for the hobby.. I heard that!   Anyhoo.. here's some pics of the tank that could be mine later in the week!

So..... just walked in with the new 180 half hour ago or so..... here's a few pics.   I'll start taking pics as we build the stand as well, to see nothing into something.   Should be awesome.

I hope.

Here's a pic of the overflow box side.  The water goes in there, but only when it gets to the top of the box and get fit through the grates.

Length of tank pic

This is where the water will shoot back out of... my rock setup is going to have to be really interesting with this.

And then this is just an overview shot.

I'm happy and scared at the same time.  Never bought anything off Clist before.  The tank looks good from my inspection and he filled it up 1/4 way until I said he could stop.   I believe him on the no leaks, but still I'm nervous just a tad.  He has a first baby coming and needs space so they're selling the big tank.  He was like, "I wouldn't waste my time on C-list selling something broken and all the hassle and crap".....   I agree.

Yeah, I've boughten shit off C-List before.  You can really tell a lot by how it's advertised and then by the people when you meet them.  If it doesn't feel right, it isn't.  Selling stuff on there is funny too... some of the "people" that show interest.  Oh man...

Ya.. he seemed legit.   I picked up no lying, or shadiness, even though he still could be.   He's in school training to be a pharmacy tech... younger kid.  Actually said he took his wife to The Cann once earlier in the year.. ha!   He was like.. you know where I live and have my number.. I'm no shady.   This tank works.    I believe him.

I didn't want to fill the tank up all the way because we were outside on the street area in his complex... he lives in the Los Cabbelleros area.. I can't spell that place... YOu know, by costco on Newhope and Warner.    The ground was uneven, so I didn't want it going to high and fucking up the tank.    There was no leaks from what I saw.

Well we started the stand up today... got it about half way done.   Should finish up that by sunday... I'm just a bit worried about the tank though.   A lot more crazing on the acrylic than I saw in the sunlight once I got it home and examined it.   I'm scared it will bust.   Not sure the returning policy on Craigslist... but I'm a bit nervous.

Here's some of the stand so far.   Have the base of the stand and the top part done.   Gonna need to get the legs up later.

The stand will look similar to this one.. we're going for that type of build.. besides the bottom tank.

A little mock up of how it will look.  This is the top upside down front of it.   So imagine it flipped around.. but ya.. this is the front, upside down right now.  Need to put the four 4x4's on the corners as well.  Gonna notch the wood out of those so they fit like a jig saw puzzle with the 2x4's that are around the edges of the base and the top.

And here's the base.  Was hoping to have the whole skeleton put together today but haven't heard from my buddy yet.  He took the 4x4's with him to cut them to fit.  So... we shall see if I get any farther today.

Sorry, but that got a laugh out of me.  There is no return policy on CL bro.  You're just dealing with a private seller.  Like if you bought it at a yard sale kind of thing.  From what you've wrote, the guy sounded legit tho.  So if it should break on ya, he might work with ya on a refund, even if only partial.  I'm an optimist, so I'll be waiting to see that bad boy up on the stand and full of water.   :drinks2:

Ya,already talked to him.  he said if I didn't feel comfortable after a week of water testing it to bring it back to him.  no problems.

so we shall see.  i think the tank should be good too.  But there is some crazing on the actual tank, and not the seams that has me nervous.

Thanks.  Should of had the skeleton done yesterday, but my buddy wasn't around.  Hope to get it done soon.

In tank news, I emailed the tank maker and showed him pictures of what I was worried about.  They got back to me and told me nothing to worry about, tank looks fine.  It'll work just great.    What a relief!   So glad they got back to me.   He also gave me tips on the stand and to make sure it's completely dry after doing water and stain staining... I guess the fumes can crack the acrylic as it dries...so that was good to know.

Wow, that was really cool of the tank manufacturer to get back to you. That's top shelf customer service. Especially given that you bought it used. I'm huge on customer service. Seems to be a lost art.

I mentioned that to them and told them I will buy my next new tank from them just because of this.

Also forgot to mention that I'm going to move my big tank that's in the front room, into the back room now also.. .and have this back room my "tank room".   Should be pretty cool.    i hope.

Thinking of going with Tahitian Moon Sand.

That black bottom sand.  Mmmmmmmm

Thinking of going with Tahitian Moon Sand.

That black bottom sand.  Mmmmmmmm
Ended up getting 60lbs of that moon sand and also 60 lbs of this "Zack Black" as well.

Now I grabbed the Zack Black because it has
Quote
*    Complete substrate for aquariums housing African Cichlids
*    Natural buffers maintain a high pH African Cichlids enjoy
*    Packed with living bacteria to cycle new cichlid aquariums

Eco Complete African Cichlid Substrates are packed with live, water-purifying bacteria to jumpstart the cycling process. Its high internal surface area allows more room for water purifying bacteria to thrive. Also packed in a water conditioner to remove chlorine/chloramines and reduce fish stress.
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+9805+8976&pcatid=8976

And that Tahitian Moon Sand is neutral.... It has no help to the water besides looking great and soft for the fish.  So I think I might get another 20 of each as well... we shall see.   120lbs so far for that 180... I like a pound per gallon but with all the sand and rocks that brings down a true 180 down to maybe around 160 or a little more.   We shall see.  But I'm excited for my first ever all black substrate.   Once you go black!!!

ps.. here's info on the Moon Sand.
Quote
*    Fine-grade substrate ideal for saltwater and freshwater aquariums
*    Non-buffering aquarium substrate contains no artificial dyes or paints
*    Gorgeous black sand enhances rich coloration of aquarium fish

Important: CaribSea Tahitian Moon Substrate is safe for use in Saltwater or African Cichlid Aquariums. However, keep in mind that it is a pH-neutral product and proper pH for marine aquariums must be maintained by a marine buffer.

And this will be the front, it's going to have 3 doors.   Have to screw in rest of those legs and stuff.. then the top goes on and then the plywood on the very top.   Almost there!

a dude on this one site i post on for fish related stuff and who's made his own stand and all that jazz.. this is a quote from him there... holy crap we built a strong ass stand!  Hope that tank holds!

Quote
Looking good so far. By my calculations, as long as the stand is square and level, it should be able to handle over 112,000 lbs. I hope you don't find any issues with the tank.

Put the tank on top... the bottom of tank has a little wobble from not being used..  gonna get some styrofoam type stuff from Home Depot to put under and that should help with any wobble until the tank kind of warps itself a bit when it's all filled.  But anyhoo.. this is what the tank looks like on top of the stand!

60lbs of the "Zack Black" Cichlid sand came in today.   60lbs of the Tahitian Moon Sand comes tomorrow, and I like the looks of this zack black sand... probably will pick up another 60 lbs of it and then sprinkle the moon sand on top of that.

Picked up some sandpaper and stainer/water proofing all in one stuff from Home Depot today as well... so gonna get going with that here soon.

Foam under tank... let's fill this bitch up to the top before it hits the unplumbed overflow.

Holy shit I ran to cut of the water so fast before it went over the falls and leaked on my stand.  ... Wow!

And here it is with the water so far as high as i will let it go without plumbing.  Only has another couple inches.. so we let this sit over night and hope to wake up to a dry ground out there.

Nice job !
I'll ask you the schemas and all details :-)
I'd like to create a huge one one day, but for marine fish. Mine is only 200 liters.

I'll take a look at the video and the screenshots and I don't see any reinforcement in the middle of the tank ?
Are you sure it's not going to failed ? I ask because I have one that the reinforcement failed and of course, it's full of fish and water so I'm affraid that one day he can flood a part of my house. Welcome to the Titanic  :no_pity:
Title: Re: Your Fish Tanks...
Post by: miDnIghtEr20C on April 08, 2014, 03:01:45 PM
Oh ya.. for sure it's got middle reinforcement.   Right here.. .this is the top of it with all the 2x4's in the middle.   That's the top right here.

Then we added a 3/4 inch thick piece of plywood on top for extra help.   I have acrylic tanks, not glass tanks, and acrylic NEEDS to have a covered full covered bottom or the bottom will bow out and break.   My tank stand and that tank is for a 180 gallon tank.   6 feet long, by 2 feet wide and 2 feet tall.   This thing is built strong my friend.  So ya, any questions always feel free to ask.   Get photos of your fish up here in this thread some time.

Got some of the plumbing stuff bought and starting my strategy...  only thing wrong in this pic is that the big bulkhead is too big.  Need a smaller one.  So I'll exchange that for a smaller one, but the return parts are perfect.

this is the front of the return.  was going to get one that had two arms stretching long on it, but then saw that it was 34.99.   the one i bought was 9.99.    it's the same style as my 140 has.   If I didn't have the power heads that  I have I would of bought the longer reach one, but I have power heads.

also, I saw the same kind of crazing on a big tank at the fish store that i go to today.   same exact as on my tank.  same exact!    YES!  i asked the dude about it, he was like naw.. nothing to worry about.   and even so if there was it wouldn't just explode.   anyhoo.... knock on wood!

gonna skip the drawer setup and use socks.   they look like this.

the water will pass through that.  I'll add some other sponges under it too to soak up more particles.  then i'll have a power head in there just for the hell of it, the flow will be strong anyways, and then have the bio stuff... so much of it down there and the return pump.    Not sure if I'm going to just go 30 gallon tank, or 30 gallon tub.   People are saying those square ones can crack over time.   Not sure.

I thought I was going to have it all set up tomorrow.. but I need a check valve.. and I'm broke with cash big time so I used a credit card to order one online.  So next week I'll have all water in and get it flowing the right way.  Tonight gonna put a power head in there to get that water circulated.

I'm thinking of going with 2 of these:

Thoughts?

I really just want to keep the fish alive and the tank somewhat clean.. I'd rather put the remaining budget towards the other stuff now and upgrade the fish tank later..

It'll work for the fish you are getting... I'm not the biggest fan of the undergravel ones though.. but they can work good.   I'd go for one of these... if you can.   It's on sale too.  http://www.amazon.com/AquaClear-110-Aquarium-Power-Filter/dp/B000260FV6/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1399934315&sr=1-1&keywords=ac+110+filter

Those are GREAT and way WAY easy to clean .   All you do is clean the sponge and put a new carbon filter in there... it hangs on the back of your tank.    get one of those.       And if you want it to be way nice and clean.. maybe ad it's little brother too.. the ac 50.     they're good and really easy.   http://www.amazon.com/AquaClear-50-Power-Filter-Includes/dp/B000260FUM/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1399934446&sr=1-1&keywords=aquaclear+filter

Huge tank day... some pics.  I'll tell you what.. It's a pain in the ass catching fish in about 110 gallons of water or so with an 8 inch wide net.  I needed a 16!  Here's some pics of the fish ready to be caught.. then caught and in the new tank.   Now to take out water of 140 and sand and move it back into the fish tank room.

Short video.... so far so good.  Water will be cloudy for a week or two... that damned Asian Upside down Catfish might become a problem.  He got really big really fast.    He's huge compared to the fish.   Don't want him eating my boys.

I'm thinking of going with 2 of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Premium-Undrgravel-Filter-18-Inch-48-Inch/dp/B0002APVAW

Thoughts?

I really just want to keep the fish alive and the tank somewhat clean.. I'd rather put the remaining budget towards the other stuff now and upgrade the fish tank later..
It'll work for the fish you are getting... I'm not the biggest fan of the undergravel ones though.. but they can work good.   I'd go for one of these... if you can.   It's on sale too.  http://www.amazon.com/AquaClear-110-Aquarium-Power-Filter/dp/B000260FV6/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1399934315&sr=1-1&keywords=ac+110+filter

Those are GREAT and way WAY easy to clean .   All you do is clean the sponge and put a new carbon filter in there... it hangs on the back of your tank.    get one of those.       And if you want it to be way nice and clean.. maybe ad it's little brother too.. the ac 50.     they're good and really easy.   http://www.amazon.com/AquaClear-50-Power-Filter-Includes/dp/B000260FUM/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1399934446&sr=1-1&keywords=aquaclear+filter

I've ordered the first one.. I'll let you know how it works.. thanks!

Nice!  It'll do you nice.   If you go to a petco, or petsmart around you.. one bottle is 25 bucks.. but it's way worth it.. and you can add fish instantly and it makes your water perfect for fish right away.  Has crazy bacteria stuff in it that is awesome.  I use it.   Just a suggestion for an easy start.. it's called Tetra Safe Start.  Give it a google..  Good stuff.

Wow!   It's on sale at Amazon.. WOW!  That's so cheap.  I wish I would of known this.  +http://www.amazon.com/Tetra-77962-SafeStart-70-gallon-8-45-Ounce/dp/B002DZNP3E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1400557532&sr=8-1&keywords=safestart+tetra

Ya, your tank is big enough to just use the whole bottle.  Shake that stuff up good and just pour it in.

edit.. my fish arrive any time between now and an hour.  And of course I have to go to work though right after.  Won't be able to enjoy them till I get back.  Hope they don't get beat up.

My tank suffered from the ich!  Dammit!  A bad one too, but now things are getting back to normal.  I lost both my Pictus Catfish and a Clownloach so far.  Dammit... sad about my Loach.  The other one saw the other day, but he didn't look good at all.  Ich takes down loaches and catfish like that very easy.   All my fish are ok though and things are starting to get locked in there on who's who.

@VOLTAN got in a huge fight this morning.   Held his own in this one.. he used to get bullied by this fish, and now he's striking back.  As of this post I'm looking over there and he's on the side that the fish he fought is on and showing no cowardliness.  I believe there's now fish respect between the 2 of them.   You'll see the King of the tank get on over and break them up at the end.

Ya.. when I bought that fish I picked him out of 6 other Electric Yellows in the tank at PetSmart of all places.   He was pissed in that tank and his colors were glorious.  I knew it was Male right away... I knew he had bad ass in him.  those fish usual don't hold their own with the others mixed like this.  But I knew this one was different.    Look at him here.. the day I brought him home on Valentines Day.   Look at him!   Little Voltan there.  And then watch the video above again.  Look how much he's grown in 5 months or so.

Oh shit!   Did you buy that stuff that let's you add fish pretty much instantly?  I think you might of.  Sent you a link about it I think.

If you add that stuff, I'd wait maybe 2 days at most.    Add your Plecostumus first... the sucker fish.  Buy a Bristlenose one from PetSmart get 2 of them.. maybe 3.  They're not much.   They only get to about 4 inches.  The regular ones can grow up to over a foot...so make sure you get the bristlenose... besides.. it's cool looking with that shit hanging off it's face.

let those guys rock it in there for the first couple days... then slowly but surely start to add your fish stock. ....   Can't wait to see it!

Title: Re: Your Fish Tanks...
Post by: miDnIghtEr20C on August 05, 2014, 08:29:52 AM
Yep.. that should be good.  You have your filter running right now right?  That way stuff is getting mixed up in there and tank is being filtered.   Make sure your tank water is warm enough before adding your fish also.   Get a school like 3 clown loaches!  They're nice fish and cool to look at!   You can see them on my video.. the orange and black looking ones.  They eat snails that form in the tank.

Also don't be surrpised if your water is cloudy right off the bat... that happens always in new tanks.  it should clear after about a week.   Faster if you buy that de-clouder.

water might not be all the way there quite yet.  The water is probably reacting to getting new life in there and all that.   Buy some test strips sometimes so you can test your water.  Those always help.  They can tell you what you need to do.

Ha ha.. that's not even much at all!  You can do a 1/4 every 2 weeks or do a huge half water tank change every month!  Or once a week take an 1/8 out.   That's what I do usually.

I know your gif was joking but still... the more frequent smaller change is way easier than having to gear up for a big ass  water change.  Unless you're right next to where you're dumping the water and filling it.   If that's the case..

Meh.. fish like fresh water like we like fresh air.  :)

You'll be fine as long as you got those bristle nose ones.. htey stay 4 inches max.  The regular ones can get to like 10 inches or more!   Like our penises!

Also they sell cheap algae wafers at the pet stores for those guys.  You just drop them in at night and they'll get them.

Just a little update of my tank... so far so good.  I've only lost one fish this whole time since I set it all up and I have a shit load of babies that are somehow surviving not being eaten by the others.   Don't get me wrong.. majority are getting eaten.. but there's a lot that have hid until big enough to roll with the others.  Must be because of all the rocks and it's a 180 gallons.  Lot's of hiding spaces.  There's even babies in my sump that took the trip all the way through the pipes.. I'll have to get a video of those guys.   Anyways, here's a quick video update.   Water is tinted brown a bit because of fresh driftwood that i should of let soak more outside.

BTW.. I thought @VOLTAN was dead.  Hadn't seen him in about a week or little more.... then I saw him yesterday as a feeding was going on and today.  3/4's of his tail has been bitten off..... Not sure who fucked him up... but he's a tough little fucker.  Still alive and kicking and still has some clout.

Not sure if someone nipped him up and kicked his ass... Not sure if maybe the Upside down Asian Catfish which is about 7 inches long caught him in the middle of the night by the tail or something and caught him slipping and tried to eat him or if he had a disease like fin rot... but I'd expect all his fins to look rotted.   Just his tail.

Long story short.... Voltan is alive and kicking and will come back I believe.

I'm not ambitious enough to go the saltwater route.  Although, they typically make for more beautiful tanks.
Whatever happened with this @Omni78 ???

Sold it a couple years ago.  Damn, time flies.

Very nice assortment.  You will not find exotic Africans like that at the national chain pet stores.  I have been looking around your website, very cool.  It appears to be mostly for video games but a lot of other cool topics also, like fish!  I will put up pictures when I get my 55 gallon glass aquarium started.

Those things are cool.  They do not mess with the cichlids or vice versa?  I'm always nervous on mixing different species together in the same aquarium.

They sell pictus at petsmart and such.  They will only go after cichlids if they're super small.. like fry and like that size.   They're actually really cool to have and eat all the crap that gets left over.   Always active.

DON'T NET THEM THOUGH!   Their side fins have barbs and get stuck in the net.  I have had this happen to me twice with them while netting them.   If you ever transfer them into a bigger tank, try to corner them with a cup and net.. make them go in the cup.  Or else prepare to cut the net a tiny to set them free.  http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=276

A little flake food feeding.  Check out @VOLTAN there if you can see him go past.   His tail is about 40% back!   Doing much better in this tank.   Survivor!

A wonderful display of a feeding frenzy by a group of healthy African cichlids.  Those fishes look great!  I see you have some young specimens in there.  Are they offspring of cichlids already in the tank?

I think I'm going to buy a Go Pro camera and put it in my fish tank.  See if the fish come up close to it and see if it looks cool.   Hmmm.

You were gonna be burried in that tank at one time as I recall. Are you going with salt water? or doing the fresh route? Replacing or adding to the collection? Trying to picture where you are putting it. Congrats, thats quite a gift!
When @Loady Smurf used to post here.   Ahhhhh... memories.  :D
