Post by: cuco33 on February 09, 2010, 02:22:22 PM
Yep... I'm into photography too  :P

I'm in the process of sorting through my 2009 Italy pics from my stay out there (8 months) I'll post some here from travels and whatnot.

You're trying for that bokeh look? What camera/lens do you have?

I took these for my lady using the bokeh method, a Nikon D60, a Nikkor 35mm f1.8 lens, an SB600 flash bounced off ceiling (not enough light though; not edited images although I should have edited them for more brightness):

Either I set the apeture to 1.8 or 2.8 for these.

I have a beginner camera. It's a Kodak Z981, 14mp. Don't have any lighting systems yet, just got it yesterday. The lens is by Schneider-KREUZNACH, it is called the Variogon 26mm-676mm
These photo's are unedited. I'm so tired, otherwise I would edit them. :o

Good camera. Mess around with settings and learn what it can do. You'll love it once you know a few more things. I'm still learning to this day!!

The lens is a good one. Not sure about sensor but if they spent money on a good lens it probably has a good sensor too. Don't shoot in digital zoom. People do that a lot and it usually comes out bad with the pics. Keep it before whatever line that goes into digital zoom.
If you want that bokeh effect, set the ap to f2.8. Try to mount it on something, tripod/box/whatever to keep it steady. Get your focal point set, put it on timer and let the camera take the pic. That BMW steering wheel pic would look even better if bokeh-ed showing the BMW emblem in focus and rest faded out of focus.

I will try it later, thanks for the tips! Coming from video into photo is so much fun but challenging.

Your camera should be plenty fine for what you want to do. Did you 'freehand' the pic though? Looks good but not as sharp as maybe it should be. Try setting it to timer and resting the camera on something, whether it be a tripod or some books. The more stable the camera is and the thing you're trying to capture, the sharper the image. Try setting camera to maximum resolution, and adjust some settings. Keep snapping and trying different things, it's the way you'll best know. Lighting seems fine which is usually the culprit for not the best pics. Set macro mode. If you want the most detail adjust the f-stop to as big as you can, not f2.8 or f4 but rather f8 or f11, whatever is best. When you want bokeh, like those shots where it's crystal clear sharp in one area but fades away to blurriness the rest of the pic, that's when you try to go f2.8 or smaller. Shutter speed usually is for things in motion where you go longer exposure to get effects like rolling shots, such as these I took for a friend (1/speed, basically if he's going 50mph you set it to 1/50. If I wanted dead nuts freeze frame I'd make the shutter speed the fastest possible like 1/5000).

To me it seems you want really sharp pic to see details so set camera to aperture priority and adjust the f-stop to f8/f11 etc, but select macro if it's an option. The other thing is other settings like focal points the camera reads to find what it should be, etc.

hey cuc,

something is missing form your Italy pics!     the hot italian ladies.

also another question, i always hear people say don't use digi zoom, because you can lose detail. now i want to know does that mean don't use zoom at all? or just the part where my cameras regualr zoom goes into this extra realm of zoom?

here are some pics, using some cheap $17 dollar macro lens set i got and using the digi zoom.

I have almost 1/2 of a 1TB HDD drive of pics just from Italy. I'm missing a TON that I haven't converted, edited, nor uploaded.  :P

Yeah for point n shoot cameras I avoid digital zoom like the plague. I make pretend it's not even there. You lose detail and it depends on the sensor and the software if it's capable of doing a good job. Most times it doesn't so it's one of those.

It was an awesome view.

I think I took this with my 10-20mm Sigma wide angle. Funny story though, I can point out the small lil restaurant that I had Florentine steak just 20minutes before I went on this huge climb up almost 400 steps inside the tower. The shot I posted wasn't even the top most part of the tower. I was dieing going up those steps after eating a huge lunch just minutes prior. I took a rest and snapped away. Got some more cool shots but this one, dunno why, I dug a lot. Kind of captures Florence, the cathedral, the city, the beautiful sky all from that day.

The uncompressed image of this is huge btw and you can't make it out much but on the top of the cathedral's dome there are people. After walking up the tower and almost dieing I said no way in hell am I doing it all over again in the cathedral. lol

Florence is very beautiful btw. Statue of David was a sight in itself. After living 9 months in Italy and seeing many statues that were mostly made up of multiple stones... the statue of David is in one of the famous museums in Firenze and is MASSIVE!! All made from 1 piece of marble. It was amazing to see the detail and perfection cut out of a single piece of rock, not multiples like most other statues not even 1/4 of the size.

AC1 was cool at first but got so repetitive that I never finished it.
AC2 on the other hand... A-W-E-S-O-M-E-!!! I thought it was 200x better than the 1st and note again, 1st was cool aside from the repetition. AC2 had very little of that but the story was better, characters were cool, and so much to do. When my friend told me 'dude... pick up AC2, you lived in Italy for 9 months... I was there for not even 1 week and you'll LOVE IT. Sure was right. Climbing the monuments I visited a year earlier kind of took me back

Damn... meant to put it in spoiler tags, but put it on quote tags lol

Put it this way homey, AC1 I loved the whole concept on it... assassin from way back in the day, most accurate digital reproduction of Jerusalem, great visuals, open world, cool story line, etc. It just got so... damn... repetitive... and AC2 added a bunch more things and massively reduced the repetitive nature of the game. Absolutely loved AC2. I want AC:Bro but haven't picked it up yet. I still have some side quests to do in AC2

once again, I can't argue any point. AC1 was an amazing title, sadly I could only play about an hour of it before the repetitiveness killed it for me. Plus I gotta say I was more of a fan of the idea of it being all based in the past, opposed to being "flash backs". I was quite abrasive to the whole "sci fi" element and found it unnecessary, and those sequences quite boring (I'm sure they're better late in the game).  Like I said, it left a bad taste in my mouth, I know I'm judging the series as a whole too harshly. I know I am a fool for it. However I also have had way too many titles that I'm actually interested in to play since it's come out. If and when there is ever a lull (I imagine this likely wont happen until next gen.) I will pick it up and check it out.

lol don't own it, and I'm already backlogged like a mofo. I gotta play Fable III and Dragon Age II because I wanna rip on em more effectively (I hit a brick wall in both!) I got Fight Night Champion to Play, Mafia II, and the list goes on. I'll get to AC2 I promise, but I need to get to Alan Wake first if that's any indicator ;)

Hmmm I sorted some of my pics on flickr/photobucket, maybe it broke the link.

I have an older Nikon D60 w/ a bunch of lenses, filters, tripod and an SB600 flash. I actually want to upgrade to the D90 which wasn't available when I got the D60. Photo places only want 100-200 for trade in so I don't think it's worth it. Might just get a D90 kit and sell of the D60 w/kit 18-55mm lens or just keep it and give to the lady.
Title: Re: Photography
Post by: mondayshift on April 19, 2011, 10:18:32 AM
which would you choose the D90 or the T3i?
Title: Re: Photography
Post by: cuco33 on April 19, 2011, 11:31:47 AM
I'm not sure on the Canon T3i but the D90 is known to really be a beast of a camera. My friend was assistant photo for someone I know who shoots weddings and events and she said at minimum he'd want the D90 as the backup or for her when she's shooting purely as an assistant. She had I think an older D50 or D70 but upgraded to D90 and never looked back. Compared to D60 it has much better handling of low light conditions with much better higher ISO (not as noisy aka grainy), more AF points, much more features, can shoot video in HD, has the autofocus motors on the body (D40, D40X and D60 doesn't have autofocus motors in body so my 50mm f1.8 is manual focus only, everything else works fine), list goes on. It has a better sensor so the quality of the images are better too. I've been asking around to find out if the D90 will be replaced anytime soon by a newer model but the newer lines are still not the D90s direct replacement.

when you can i say do it, if you can't yet save and get a good one. i wished someone had told me this a few years back.

here is a pic using the Canon EOS REBEL 3Ti.

it's just cropped with a few things around the watch taken out. the watch image itself was not touched and i used the BW feature on the camera. i'm waiting for another lens that i want to try out and really start taking pictures with. i used the kit lens that came with the camera which is in my not so knowledgeable opinion...nice. this camera is really forcing me to learn things. and showing me how there is so much i'm missing buy relying on good old Auto Mode. this is such a nice camera to bad some of the lens i want to get cost more than the camera!

here is the picture untouched.

and it wouldnt work in my bathroom need special lights for developing, but the film process has to be done in compete darkness no light at all. plus the dead bodies wouldnt fit in the bathroom  ;)

yeah, man. i really wish i had been smart enough and patient enough to have just saved up for a really good camera way back when. i could of been enjoying taking pictures instead of flopping the camera down on the table once i took the overly exposed, flat, forgettable pictures. i freaking went to library today with the wife and kids just so i can take pictures! the library! i even told my wife that i'm going to go to birthday parties from now on so that i can shove my camera into those parents faces that think they're freakin Ansel Adams or something.

What settings you shoot it at? Normally the rule of thumb is F11 = everything. But it seems you're going for bokeh look. Sharpness comes especially when camera is super still when going to F2.8 or lower.

this was on f/1.8. i think it was my $10 dollar tripod i use to calibrate my 5.1 setup. it feels like it's going to crumple on the weight of the camera. i swear it moved just on the shutter or mirror moving. but i'll try it again on a smaller f/. not sure what shutter speed or ISO.
Title: Re: Photography
Post by: cuco33 on May 03, 2011, 10:49:59 AM
Yeah I was thinking it was 2.8 or 1.8. If on tripod, set the camera to timer because sometimes unstable tripods could still be shaking a smidge while taking a shot.
Set the camera to Ap (aperture priority), try f1.8 and f2.8. What ISO did you shoot at? If you want the sharpest then the lowest ISO is best, but if it's low light conditions and you can't throw in a light somehow towards the subject then go higher ISO. I tend to stick to ISO100 or ISO200 unless low lit, then I trye ISO400. The camera will adjust shutter speed accordingly.
The next thing would then be white balance and that's usually set to auto. Shoot in RAW if possible. Software later can extract more info from the image file from a RAW file than a JPEG file. Like you won't be able to adjust aperture nor shutter speed nor ISO but you'll have full range on color (natural, vivid, soft), white balance, etc.

It's there though, and so far a nice shot. Just some trial and error. Try taking the shot again but at F2.8, everything exactly the same outside of putting the camera on the same tripod, shoot with timer (2sec, 10sec, whatever so long as the tripod and camera is super still) and take like a lamp and put a white thin shirt over it and shine it at the subject. Your pic should come out better but I don't think you're off much

BTW, do you have a filter like a circular polarizer or anything of the sort? I have a few which basically you put on the end of your lens. When you take a CP filter you can turn it. What it does is knocks out glossiness and shines off of shiny stuff like cars.

thanks cuc, you actually inspired me with those Italy pics and car pic you had and damn GT5. i do have a Hoya CP. came with a lens deal i made. before that i had no idea. i tried it on our sliding doors and they work good to take that glare out. still looking for good time to use it.

haha..perv. this was actually a Meet Up group i checked out last night. we were trying to do light trails of cars, i got bored and just took pictures of the people.
the haze and smoke is from the wild fires going on in Arizona.  :o  when i got home i smelled like camp fire.

Monday, you continue to take some awesome pic man. I actually am tempted at getting a Nikon D7000 now as I was told it's better in almost every way than the body I wanted, a Nikon D90. I need an upgrade and all the extra features these have over mine = winning.

You post processing them on the PC or doing everything in camera? That 1st one with the steps at school looks like the HDR effect. Actually all 3 look like you messed with HDR a bit.

thanks man. yeah it seems like the D7000 is the rave on the Nikon side. nothing but good stuff being said.

i do the post processing with Lightroom. i have a hard time looking at the small LCD on the 60D and it also doesn't ahve enough options. i haven't tried HDR i just adjusted presets and options in Lightroom.

since most of my picture taking is around the middle of the day i adjust my pictures to what's in my head before i took the shot. as suppose to adjusting the picture to look as close to what i actually saw. i have no idea if this is against some sort of rule or i'm ass backward. haha.  ;D

i am so glad i bought a camera, it gave me another creative outlet since i'm bored with painting and drawing so much i just stop for months. photography is way more challenging than i thought.  :-[

hey good observations. but actually it was my first real try at street photography at night and i was trying to see how slow i can handle the shutter speeds.....lesson i learned is up the ISO cause i can't shoot at slow shutter speeds for crap or with out a tripod.

i'm already thinking of upgrading my Camera to a Full Frame instead of a crop body that i have now with the Canon 60D.
